NEW GRAF G5 ULTRA

Recommended Posts

I know which I'm pissed because they told me I couldn't get white.

Well your not in the NHL....There are some skate they will only do for NHL players. They are limited in there production so I am sure they dont have a ton of material to make all the stuff people want.

Isn't there a great white version in the Euro catalog? Its not quite the same as Tuckers but, they still have white on them!

You may be thinking of the Great white version of the Ultra G70:

I'm guessing that this is an Ultra Series of the 707.

Bump...I'm in need of some new skates, and have been looking at the grafs. Does anyone know what the difference is between the G3/G5 ultras out now, and the G-70 that they have on the euro site? The G-70 is supposed to come with a new "ultralite 5000" holder, and new steel. Is the G-70 an updated model to replace the G5/G3, or is it just part of another line of skates unavailable in the US? I'm a bit confused...thanks.

Yea...it looks like the G-70 and the G-5 Ultra are the same skate, but the 70 has more cosmetic options, and is the euro version...I may be wrong though, hopefully someone on here knows.

My son has the G5 Ultras and they do look identical (only all black) and the description of the mesh liner sounds the same. The holder is the same as well.

I tried on a pair at Source for Sports while my skates were being sharpened. They fit similar to my 705s which are a wide width. The mesh lining is comfortable and the skates are pretty light. The boot is a bit shorter cut and the tendon guard is lower at the back. Sorry to all those One-90 lovers, but I would buy these in a heartbeat over the Bauers.

Sorry if this has already been asked in some shape or form, but how does heat molding affect the fit of the G5 Ultra? Is there a dramatic difference before heating and after? I'm also wondering if the new liner compacts, or if it keeps its thickness with use. I've always found the traditional Graf felt tongues to be too thin, so if the new tongue didn't compact then that would be a good thing (from my perspective).

just asked my son.He didn't find that heat molding made a dramatic difference. It did take him about 6 to 8 skates to feel broken in as opposed to the G9's which were comfortable immediatly (though heavy). He said the lining and tongue do compress, but he skates barefoot so I would guess that the moisture from the foot accelerated this process.I think the tongue is somewhat thicker than the traditional felt one though.

Yes these are for sure the Euro version of the G5 Ultra.

BTW; indaslot, Would you post a picture of the inside lining of the G5 ultra. I have not seen it in person yet. Thanks in advance

I've been thinking about getting CCM vectors for my new skates, but I've always heard great things about Graf, so do any of you guys have an idea on how the two compare? Like how the fit would compare...and I've also heard the Grafs have you angled up on the balls of your feet quite a bit more than other skates. If anyone could shed some light on that it would be really helpful. And yes, I know, try them on, but the nearest shop that *might* have them is over an hour away.

My son wore Vector Pros before switching to Graf. They were the "in"skate at that time.Difficult break in (for him). Some lace-bite and chafing at the ankle bones. After he outgrew that pair,I simply could not find a size that fit him. Finally, I found an excellent LHS that told me they were too shallow for him. They suggested the Graf G9.It was like magic. After molding, he was able to skate immediatly with no discomfort.I had been warned about the forward pitch, but he took to it immediatly. The only issue was the weight. The clarino took forever to dry and they really felt heavy. This year he switched to the G5 Ultra.Again,a near perfect fit and very light as well.My only issue ia the construction on this model: the stitching is very shoddy and sloppily sewn.Graf needs to revamp that aspect.Other than that,a great skate. If you don't like the pitch, that can be remedied. There is a good thread on this topic by the very knowledgeble skate sharpening experts on this board.Again, this is a personal issue as what worked for my son may not work for you.

If you look carefully at the photo of the G70 posted above (the skate on the right)you will see that the lining is a fine, black mesh.It is identical to the G5 lining.Let me know if you can make it out. If not, I will get my kids to post a photo. It is beyond my area of computer expertise!

Hmm...I knew that there was a problem with the original G series durability, but I thought that it would have been corrected with the "ultra" skates...how do you think the durability is on these skates, and how are your son's looking after X amount of playing time? I really would expect these issues to be non-existent for skates that cost $540 or whatever it is..

Forgot to mention that the durability of the vector pros was terrible.Pieces would fall off tthe skate at an alarming rate. They probably have corrected this by now though.

Since October he has worn them 4-5X a week.A bit of exterior stitching coming out.It is more the extreme sloppiness of where they have sewn the liner to the skate i.e. at the tendon guard and ankle. It looks as if it has "expanded"(not sure how to describe it).I must add though, that my son skates barefoot,is a rough player and weighs 180lbs,so perhaps this takes more of a toll on the skates than a lighter,"calmer"player.Still, his G9's are in great condition after a year of heavy skating. They are much heavier, though. As you say, at that price, the finishing should not be an issue.

So does anyone know if they will be making "ultra" versions of the G3 or G9 boot, as they have done with the G5? I just had my foot sized at the local graf retailer, and I need one in the 703/G3 boot size, wide...also my left foot is an entire size bigger than my right, so I will need to get the toe cap punched out. I never even realized these things, as I haven't had my feet properly fitted in years...now I know why my right skate seems way too big.

Back to the point, I am leaning towards graf 703/G3 skates...but, I don't want to purchase G3s if the new "ultra" versions are coming out soon anyway. I have seen some sites with the supra G skates on closeout, so maybe they will be releasing an ultra G3 soon? Hope somebody on here might know..

Thanks for the help indaslot, it's much appreciated...and anyone else who may have some information on these skates!

I'm sure we'll get confirmation at the show in January.
