For You roller players that also play ice

Recommended Posts

You'll notice a difference with 5/8". I think I read somewhere, that even a difference of 1/16" will make a big deal.

I've also tried 3/4". I definitely could not stay with this hollow. Felt like I had no bite to the ice.

Sorry I mean do you find the 5/8" is easy to adjust to and from when you play roller

Yes, probably the most similar feeling hollow to roller, that I have used. However, that is just me, it may be different with you. Also, I use t-blades, which makes a big difference on how it feels.

it also has to do with skating style and PP. I'd start at 1/2" and go from there. If you want sharper try something like 5/16" and just keep experimenting. It's cheaper to jump a few 1/16s and see if it's getting better or worse for you.

yeah ice quality is funny, every rink is different i have 5 ice rinks by me and all the ice is different, summer months the ice is somewhat softer, winter months the ice is a little harder ,you have to feel what hollow is right for you, when you go to a new rink ask the guy who sharpens skates at the rink what hollow would be good for the rink ice.dont forget, when you sharpen your skates 3 games later there not the same.and a clean sheet of ice is cut up and snowy by the 3rd period.ice to sportcourt/blades to wheels, its always an ajustment.its mental ajustment.

i'd go ahead and try 5/8

Basically think of a scale from 1-10, 5 of course is the regular cut the pro shop does. If it has too much bite, instead of going 1 up, go 2 up(7). If it's still too much bite then go from there but if it's too little, you know that what you're looking for is around 6 and anything around 6 would be better than 5 or 7... if that makes sense.

My point is that by skipping a few hollow sizes you can cut down the time you're experimenting with the cut(not to mention the overall price of getting repeat sharpenings).

I played roller for years before I ever played Ice, and I still play more roller than Ice. I was on 1/2" for awhile, and I was comfortable with it. I just switched to a 9/16th and right away felt a difference. The first turn I did in warmups landed me right on my ass as my skates slid out from under me. I adjusted pretty quickly, and I definitely have a lot more glide on the shallower hollow. I'll probably try the 5/8ths just for the heck of it next time.

I use 5/8 as a skater and a goalie on ice. I still stop like a roller player, so I dig in too much with my heels when I stop.
