Captain Z!

Recommended Posts

was named a Second Team All-Star and finished fourth in the Norris Trophy balloting in 2005-06.

Didn't know they were awarded in the lockout

Like Mack I would have preffered to see Bergeron as captain, but good luck to him.

What a joke. First of all the guy probably doesn't speak english. Secondly who in their right mind would name a guy captain who hasn't even played a game for that team yet.

If I recall...he does speak pretty good English..and if they aquired the guy to be a leader...why not make him the Captain.

The only other guy from that roster I could see as the Captain is Murray (am I missing anyone?). I think Bergeron is too young even though he is the Offensive leader of the team.

I think the lockout was in 04-05...

Anyways, this is a good move for the B's. They have a good leader in Chara, and I don't think that anyone else on the team is really captain material.

Niedermayer was also given the captain C before he played a game, but I think he at least wore the C for NJ while Stevens was out.

I think they were smart in not giving it to Bergeron. Yes he definitely deserved consideration as he was the clear leader on the B's in the absence of Thornton. But, look at what the C did for Thornton in his later days as a Bruin, it only hindered his play as he was too focused on being a leader then he was actually playing the game. Let Bergeron go out and be the young superstar he's going to be and leave the captainship and all its duties to a seasoned veteran who deserves the C.

If you read some of the Boston papers. Chara earned the C, it wasn't just given to him. He took control of the team before camp started. As a Bruins fan I think it was a good choice. Bergeron was too young and inexperienced to wear the C. They went down that road before.

In the past the Bruins have given the C to players based more on marketing then leadership (see Allison and Thornton). Nice to see them get one right.

Even if it may have been too early I'd have rather seen it put on Bergeron.

Chara became the obvious pick as the informal pre-camp and camp wore on. I don't like the idea of a 21 year old captain.

Chara is the biggest name on their roster. Its good that they waited and gave it to him now after he earned it, as opposed to giving it to him once he signed.

Thornton and Alison got it because they were the best players on the roster.

Not that I disagree with that. However, I think there were other factors at play when Thornton was choosen.
