Chelios broke 5 panes of glass in pre game

Recommended Posts

During the Wings game tonight they were talking about how Chelios uses no curve,,as you know he can shoot pretty well both handed.. But during pre game skate he used Maltby's stick and broke 5 panes of glass, they were talking about the rink workers wanting to kill him, because everytime they fixed the glass he would shatter a different pane... just thought you guys would find this amusing, because chelios is known around here to have the weakest shot on the team...

Lol, that is kind of funny... but what does the curve have to do with the power of the shot... I mean, especially if he's not used to it... maybe I missed something.

Found this on the NHL's website this morning, on an article about the recent curve rule changes and history behind when the curve was changed. This may answer your question Lox...

"Players league-wide noticed a huge difference as they adapted to the curved blade. One of the most dramatic examples was New York Rangers' left wing Vic Hadfield. The player, who never topped 26 goals or 66 points in his first nine NHL seasons, suddenly exploded for 50 goals and 106 points by adding nearly a half inch of curve to his stick in 1971-72. But no one made better use of the curve than perennial 40 to 55 goal scorer Hull.

"I can pull the puck in and shoot it all in one motion before the goaltender knows I'm shooting. The hook hugs the puck, and I can get a little action on it. It'll drop or rise, and I know which way it's going by the way I follow through," said Hull to Time Magazine in 1969.

The "little action" Hull referred to wasn't so little to goaltenders. The player, who could already fire slap shots at 100 mph, could now rip missiles near goaltenders' heads (in an era where masks were only starting to gain widespread usage) and change the natural trajectory of a shot by as much as 18 inches. A player with Hull's shooting skill could ticket the puck for the top corner of the net with regularity."

my point wasnt that the curve made his shot harder, I just thought it was a cool tidbit of information, however other players were shooting and not breaking glass, Mickey Redmond stated that with Maltby's stiffness and pattern chelios could let if fly a lot harder, but it was too high for his liking, Chelios never really shoots anyhow, I simply just wanted everyone to know a funny story, The rink workers went and complained to management that he was doing it on purpose.

Wow, Chelios put his walker down long enough to actually fire some shots. DO you know if Maltby uses a more flexible stick than Chelios? I did some research adn it looks like Maltby is using a 1-90 stick and Chelios is using a Super Tough. Just wonder if NBH could turn that into a selling point for the stick. I can see the commercial already. An empty ring that is filled the the sounds of slapshots and breaking glass with some line about it being dangerous if you don't hit the net.

Those announcers were only recounting the story from last season. It happened at a practice session in LA before playing the Kings. The sticks were SyNergy ST's with what looked like a YP. They ended up in the rack at hockeytown authentics about a week later.

Regardless of when this happened its still hillarious that the rink workers were getting so pissed that they had to go get management....not that cheli couldnt afford to pay for them himself,

I read this, and all I could think of is tennis balls stuck to the bottoms of Cheli's walker...

Speaking of Chelios, a special edition hockey news had pics of this guy surfing and for almost being 45, the guy looks like a ripped player in their prime at 25 YO. I couldn't believe it.

Agreed, I was floored when I saw this pic. No wonder he is able to do what he does at his age!!
