My Skate are too sharp!

Recommended Posts

If you are sliding out, then they aren't sharpened right.

JR, could you please elaborate on what sort of sharpening errors would cause one to slide out, i.e. edges not level, or something else ? I skated at a new rink the other day and as soon as I stepped on the ice I felt like my skates were sliding out. After a few shifts things got better but I never got completely comfortable and played like crap.

If you were skating at a new rink with your regular sharpening, it is possible that the ice is just better at the new rink. Harder ice calls for a deeper hollow, softer calls for shallower. A deeper hollow bites more ice than a shallow hollow, and you need the blades to bite more at the hard ice to retain the same amount of grip.

not sure if this makes sense, but maybe someone else has the words that I'm looking for...

That's correct, but even colder weather at your local rink will often equate to harder ice.

has anyone shipped there blades to this shop

are they as good as they sound?

I mail an extra set of blades to him. Consistently they are the best sharpenings I have ever gotten. They don't over charge on return shipping and total cost (shipping to, sharpening and return shipping) is only $3-4 more than my LHS for a vastly superior job.

I still think hollows should go metric! Who's with me?

Edit: Or at least use decimals. Fractions are so passé.

If you crazy canucks would just use the same measurement system as the rest of the world, we wouldn't have this problem. Don't bother, I know.

Is it possible to take the blades off of Custom+ holders without taking the holders off of the skate?

Yes, if there are holes in the footbed. If not, you're screwed.

I've been using noicingsports for my last couple profiles and I've been very pleased. Even in Minnesota "the state of hockey" competent skate sharpeners are hard to find.

This is an exact quote of the 2 teenagers working at one of my LHS when I asked for a 5/8 hollow. "Yeah, that is the standard, well almost its actually 3/4" "No its 3/8." "Yeah well, 3/8 is close to 3/4 right?"

I used to get a 24mm sharpening (in Montreal 15 yrs ago).

In Ottawa, Vancouver, and Calgary, though, it is 1".

Neal, I live in Mpls - please tell me where that shop is so I can avoid it like the crabs. PM me if you don't want to publicly humiliate them, though it sounds like they deserve it.

I have the same things to say about JR. Finally got my skates done by hime and it was the best sharpening I have ever had. He also adjusted a mismounted holder on my skates also which made a huge difference with my edge control.

Neal, Oberon,

I live in Mpls too. I've had good work at Westwood in Bloomington. A friend of mine had his skates royally screwed up at his nearby PIAS. They gave him uneven edges on one skate, and when he took them back to get them fixed, he got back two skates with different profiles and blade heights.

Westwood in Bloomington has given me a good sharpening as well. My problem is that I can usually only get into these shops on the weekends when they are very busy. And it seems like they have only 1 or 2 guys who have the skills and you can't count on getting one of them.

Besides, by the time I drive to Bloomington and wait through the lines on the weekend, its often more time and nearly more $ than just mailing them to noicing.

The PIAS sports in Minnetonka/Hopkins has some real nice guys working there, but none of them can sharpen skates. I've received blades that had burnt spots and blades that looked serrated from them.

Hanus in Minnetonka is good, but its often a long wait and you have to get the owner. The kids that work there aren't nearly as good. And you are pretty much stuck with the hollow that is on the wheel unless its the owner and the shop isn't busy.

Wow, bet jimmy's tickled to death.

Nothing like word of mouth advertising, even if that mouth is spewing bits and bytes.

I've only had Jimmy do a couple set of blades for me, but that sharpening is gorgeous, perfectly smooth without a hint of wave.

I tried emailing the dude at No Icing Sports to buy some blades from him, and he replied once after waiting a day and hasn't replied to my last email in two days. Is this guy overly busy, not very good at communicating, or am I expecting too much in the way of customer service? I told him I wanted to buy some blades and asked what he needs from me, and haven't heard from him since.

off subject, but "My Dixie Wrecked" is amazing...

that is all.

You are gross.

you sit in an office building cubicle for 10 hours a day- you have to keep yourself amuzed somehow... like writing "My Dixie Wrecked" on things, and "Dick Hurtz" on inter-office envelopes...

I feel ya, friend. Well, I don't actually feel you, but I understand what you're saying.

I have settled my problems with inconsistent sharpening by switching to T-Blades. Some people don't like'em but it has certainly fixed my problems and I have never skated as well as when I got my new blades. Sharpening is consistent with every new pair, they last me upwards of 30 hours of ice time.. I just love them.

Guy - just call him. Either him or his wife (I think) will answer.

I've been a customer for over 2 years he hasn't replied to my last email either. I know they just switched store locations and were having issues with getting the internet running so perhaps that's whats going on!?

I would say he's busy, he just opened a two level store FULL of hockey gear right next to a brand new 2 sheet facility. I was in his store last Saturday the place was nuts. He did find the time to take care of 7 of the kids that play on my team. He takes pride in his work and will give you all the time in the world if you catch him at a quite time. Give him a shot with your skates you won't regret it.!
