Oilers Hosed

Recommended Posts

Just watching the Oilers-Stars game. Wow, the Oilers got hosed! A few seconds left, Horc wins a faceoff back to the point, shot, Ryno gets the rebound and knocks it in. But the Ref McGeough waived it off. Apparently he thought Horcoff won the faceoff back with his hands and called it a hand pass. Terrible. The ref blew the game bad.

Got me thinking. I know the league doesn't like to admit to mistakes (a la Hull's goal for Dallas vs Buffalo to win the Cup) but do they reprimand or penalize a ref when they make blatantly bad calls? They punish players for flagrant mistakes, they should do something to refs too.

Almost as bad as Hemsky's field goal kick that resulted as a goal against the Wings last year <_< No simpathy for the Oil..

If you mean the one where Lidstrom was right on Hemsky at least that play went to video review. A situation like what happened to Edmonton should be sent upstairs and sorted out. Regardless of whether you are Edmonton fan or not, an obviously blown call is bad for hockey. It frustrates fans and makes the game look bad.

Some would argue that the NHL is one of if not the most thourough sports when it comes to reviewing plays and video replay... The same can't be said for the MLB for example.

I just heard Turco's comments. He said he heard the Ref's whistle the play before the puck went in which means no video review in this case but a good idea otherwise. :)

/\ Yeah, it's Magoo...he sucks horribly, and someone get him a new helmet. Looks like Pronger in that they both seem to get engulfed by their helmets.

Yeah the play was being blown dead as the shot was coming in from the point. You could actually see the ref raising his arms as the shot was being taken. But he made the wrong call. I don't even know how or why he was able to make that call since he was on the other side of the ice. It should have been the ref behind the Oilers defense that made the call since he would have the better view of the faceoff.

yeah - you mean the one that was reviewed for about 10 minutes before they concluded that it was a legit goal? Come on - not even close to the same type of thing.

This one was completely different. There are times when a ref misses a call (like earlier in the game where they blew a Lindross interference call on Roloson which resulted in an immediate goal) - I can accept the odd non-call because yes, the ref's are human. But this one was a brutal, brutal made-up call... How can Magoo (yes, notice the spelling) 'think' he sees a hand pass while looking from the other side of the rink, through 3 pairs of legs, while the ref standing right there didn't make the call.

Absolutely terrible officiating which cost the Oilers at least 1 point against a divisional rival. You don't call a penalty becuase you think there 'might' have been an infraction. As a ref, you are suppose to observe the play, not dictate it. Magoo even said to a sportswriter that he blew the call, not that it gives the Oilers any consolation.

Jeez, I thought Magoo in the Cup Finals last spring was the last we would see of him. Give the dog a bone and send him on his way. Oh well, not to be. He needs a long rest from working in the NHL. Some officials get better with experience. Magoo just gets worse.

Your Pronger picture is hilarious. I couldn't figure out who it was at first.

That is definetly the worst call ever. What if the Oilers miss the playoffs by a single point? They made it in last year by only 3 points, but it's definetly a possibility that the Oil miss it this year.

They still have 60 some games left, as a team they need to just move on. The fact that situations like this are discussed once or twice a year show just how good the refereeing in the league is. In the leagues we all play in, it seems like this sort of stuff is bitched about daily.

Point taken. If they keep skulking about the call and proceed to lose more games, they can just point to their lack of effort in the games after Mcgoo f'd things up.

Magoo at it again...Sad thing is, McTavish will be fined for his comments and Magoo will probably get a slap on the wrist for deciding a game

Mactavish fined 10,000

I'm pretty sure Refs get a "report card" from the league at the end of every game....I'd be interested to see Mr. Magoo's card from that game.

Are you guys honestly complaining that McTavish got fined? It isn't an issue over what should happen to Magoo. McTavish publicly stated that the call was "retarded". Now whether or not that is true, he needs to represent himself and his team better and not offend retards.

I have to respectfully disagree too, Kosy. As someone mentioned, that call could have repercussions later on the in the season. It could be the difference between playoffs or not. No playoffs means less $$$ for Edmonton...no ticket sales, no concession, no merchandising, tv deals...$$$. And that, as we all know, is the real driving factor behind this business, ehem, I mean sport. I don't see why officials can't be criticized in such a case. Execs are always making players own up to mistakes, be a man, etc...why can't it apply to officiating?

I hate when people get fined for saying stuff. Maybe it mite be a little "rude", but seriosuly, everyone else is thinking it. It really pisses me off when someone says what they think and what they really want to say and end up getting fined. What ever happened to freedom of speech?

This is a business. There is no "freedom of speech." It is known as the code of conduct. Its ok to disagree with this but when you sign the contract, this is one of the rules: do not criticize the officials to the media.

Mctavish was a little hasty in talking to the media while his blood pressure was still skyrocketing. IMO his words about Magoo's antics, arms waving, flailing etc. hit home. No other ref would be all 'spastic' and animated. He did something like this last year as well.

During first intermission on TV "coaches corner' tonight they said that since Magoo was a top 4 ref last year that he was talked to but will get no other repercussions.

Hope this doesn't come to haunt the Oiler's at the end of the year.

And if you are critical, you don't call a guy retarded and mock the way he officiates. McT deserved to get fined and suspended just like Mick should sit for a couple days. It's one thing to think you see something when you have a good look at it. It's something different when you are looking through a moving screen and your partner has a much better angle. As a ref I would rather miss something than make a call like that.

I think its fine to criticize him, but as soon as you say something as politically incorrect as "retarded", you cannot honestly expect him to not get fined. It'd be just like McT saying that Mick's reffing is "faggy". It isn't the criticism thats the problem, its what he said.
