Recommended skate sharpening in Vancouver

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anybody has a recommendation for a good place to get skates sharpened in the Greater Vancouver area. Used to get them sharpened at UBC, when the rink was there. Wasn't too impressed with the job done at G-Max sports. (should there be a visible "bump" on one blade?) Got them last sharpened at The Sports Exchange. (feel good so far)

Is there a really great place/knowledgeable person that GVRD people would recommend? Maybe even someone to give me some advice on profiling and such.

Larry's Sport Shop (North Vancouver)

The Hockey Shop Source For Sports (Surrey)

Cyclone Taylors (Oak St., near downtown)

Ice Level Source For Sports (Richmond)

These are all great pro shops. Mainly depends on how close you are to each.

If you live in Vancouver the closest pro shops to UBC are:

- Cyclone Taylor, on Oak Street at the corner of West 49th Avenue

- The Sports Exchange, on Burrard Street at the corner of West 5th Avenue

Both have parking at the back!

Thanks guys, actually looking more for recommendations for quality work. Is there a guru of sharpening (like OTG or JR) in Vancouver, or a better sharpening machine at a certain store, or are they all about the same no matter where I go? How about the Hockey Shop in Surrey?

The guys at Ice Level Sports always gave me good sharpenings, and gave me the hollow that I wanted. They were pretty knowledgeable while I was there.

I had bad experiences at G-Max, also. I never got the hollow that I asked for, and the edges were often uneven.

Can't go wrong with the guys at The Hockey Shop. That's where I get my skates done.

But all in all I have gone to the other LHS around the area and they've all done a very good job...typically you'd want to avoid the chain-stores (Sportchek) around here.

Definitely avoid Sportchek and Sport Mart. Cyclone is excellent, I find the Sports Exchange good too, but I find they put little extra bite on the sharpening. It's a personal preference thing. I've even had good sharpenings at the Burnaby 8 rinks pro shop.

If you are looking for a guru and want the best sharpening in Vancouver go to Canlan Ice Sports - North Shore and visit Tom and Doug at Ultimate Edge Sports. Tom is the owner and he gave me special attention when all other shops wouldn't hear me out. He has made me a better skater. The address is:

2411 Mt. Seymour Parkway

North Vancouver, BC

Take the third exit after the second narrow's bridge. I think it's exit 22 and then take your first right onto Mt. Seymour Parkway. Follow until you get to Berkeley Street and you will see the rink on your right. Good luck with the sharpening.

ODP,

I'm just guessing, but if you got your skates done at UBC in the past, you're not likely wanting to head to North Van everytime you want your skates done. I've gone to school here at UBC for the last 4 years, and I always have gone to cyclone taylor on 49th and Oak to get my skates done. It's relatively close and they do a good job.

You're only going to need a short term fix anyways, phase 1 of the new arena (2 sheets I believe) is slated to be finished by this April, which means we'll have ice again come next Sept. Do you play intramurals or drop in out here?

Tom at Ultimate Edge in Canlan Ice Sports North Shore does. He's profiled multiple sets of steel for me and they have all been awesome.
