Montreal Easton Curve

Recommended Posts

I picked up a Montreal wood stick last month and really fell in love with it. Very light weight, perfect curve, 5 lie. I went to buy another, but it's out of production and nowhere to be found on eBay or Google.

I'm thinking about picking up some kind of OPS but can't figure out which blade would be closest. Here is the Montreal chart, and I'm looking at the "European" blade:

Montreal Blade Chart

It's a 5 lie and appears to be a moderate mid curve with a closed or neutral face. The curve seems to be slightly deeper and closer to the toe than the Forsberg/Modano.

The Bauer P88 looks close, but I picked up a cheap wood One40 and can't do the 6 lie (I'm short). Can't find the Easton Heatley anywhere, although that looks pretty close as well.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Just picked up a Heatley. Probably isn't as big a hook as what I expect the European to be and probably more open. TPS Sundin might be the closest.

Sundin most likely is the closest. I have both sitting in my hosue right now. Very close in curve and face. Lie is a little off but I think thats due to the fact I have the Montreal Euro in a 6 lie. and the Sundin is a 5 or 5.5.

Thanks for the help everyone! I went to another LHS and checked out some more stuff (luckily I live in a state with a HUGE youth hockey program and in an area with a LOT of disposable income...so lots of different hockey stores).

The Heatley curve was a little more closed than the Iginla and I think it was also a little less curved. I liked the 5 lie but preferred the curve of the Iginla. Also, the Heatley had a more square toe whereas the Iginla was a little more round.

The TPS Sundin was not at all what I was expecting...it was closer to an Yzerman curve. I think I also tried the CCM Recchi which was nowhere near it as well.

BUT I did find they had some Montreal European 5 BLADES, so now I'm considering grabbing some kind of nice shaft on eBay and putting the Montreal blade on it. I'll do some research on shafts and blades and might stop back with more questions. Or I might see if I can find a closeout Iginla OPS...that was a cool little stick.

Thanks!

Bumping this one up. I'm going to the LHS today and will probably either get an Easton Cyclone or Easton Typhoon and a Montreal wood blade.

Is there a big performance difference between the Cyclone and Typhoon?

Also, I seem to like slightly thinner sticks (13" gloves) and about a 75 flex in wood sticks. I know the Cyclone is available in 70 flex and has a little thinner shaft, but what about the 70 flex intermediate Typhoon versus the 80 flex senior Typhoon? I'm 5'8" and 180 so I'm a little nervous about getting too whippy or small a stick.

Finally, I know there's a weight difference between the two. I really don't like blade-heavy sticks and the Montreal wood blade is thinner so hopefully lighter than most. Would the Cyclone be too blade heavy with a wood or hybrid blade?

Might anyone know a clone of the Numminen 5?

Maybe try the CCM Recchi or the TPS Nash? I find them both to be a little more open than I would like, which looks like the Numminen. Kind of looks like a Sakic but with a little more curve and not as open.

Sundin is almost dead on for the Euro 5 FYI.

Just got a Bauer Vapor XX for $75 :D That's what I get for going to 5 hockey stores in one day.

I use a 95 flex cyclone with a wood blade (usually easton RB Pro, sometimes an Easton fiber) for outdoor, and the balance is slightly blade heavy, but definitely tolerable. It's pretty much my favorite shaft ever. The Cyclone has the lowest advertised weight of any easton shaft, and it is a little tough to find a combo that won't be blade-heavy. Keeping the butt end in the stick will help to balance it a bit. If you're not looking to use it full-length, just cut an extra 3" and put the butt end back in after cutting.
