HD tv cables

Recommended Posts

My family just bought an HDTV and we're a bit confused about the cables. there are component cables, S-video cables and HDMI cables?

the cables that came from the cable company are component cables, but the picture quality doesn't seem that great (especially compared to in store), would a switch in cable (we also have some high quality component cables) quality or type improve the picture quality?

Also, is there some way to calibrate the TV?

I have come "Monster Video 2" component cables, would there be a noticeable difference between those and what would normally come standard?

The HD source is from thisExplorer 3250HD, and as far as i can tell, there's no optin for HDMI. out of the connections listed

(including DVI, component video, digital optical audio output, S/PDIF for easy connection to surround sound receivers, along with standard RCA A/V outputs)

component is the best one right?

I'm pretty sure it has DVI outputs, you should go with that. But the picture shouldn't look that bad with component cables (even crappy ones).

oh my bad, i didn't realize HDMI and DVI were equivalent or close to

DVI is HDMI without audio.

To expand on this, the conversion for DVI and HDMI are the same, but HDMI also carries digital audio in the same cable. And the connectors are different as well (which would make a difference in what cables you buy).

HDMI is a digital signal (which has been discussed below). Component is analog. The problem with analog singals is that they are dependent on the quality of the connection. The better the connection (pref. using gold) the better the picture. HDMI is a digital signal which means it is sent in packets of data, so either it gets there or it does not. This means you cna get a 10 dollar cable and it will be the same picture you get with a 200 dollar cable. The actual picture quality being better is very sketchy. If you have a perfect analog connection it will look the same as a digital signal. But if you have a long run of analog cable with cheap cables you MIGHT be able to tell a difference. Most people cannot tell the difference.

and for once, my info was usefull,

It would have been more useful if you had read the thread and taken note that 4-5 people have already said the exact same thing (minus the best buy crap).

Not to hijack a subject, but one of my buddies said that I should wait off till 1080 get cheaper before I buy an hdtv.. I should have some good spending loot left over from Christmas and I was planning on buying one, but I have been having second thoughts now.

well you can get a 1080p rear projection DLP on the cheap (50 inches for under a grand). But if you want a flat panel I would wait at least a year to invest.

Dont skimp on the component video cable. Monster is crap, crap connectors, crap internals, crap, crap crap.....look into Wireworld Gold Starlight, or a ZU Megular. You will notice quite a difference when upgrading the cable. 1/3 of your budget for audio or video should be put into your cableing and power purifier

Whats the point in having gold connectors if the rest of your cable is copper/tin? From what I hear he difference is less then minimal and is all marketing.

arruugh, I hate DLPs. I can't watch them for more than a few mins, the whole picture looks like it's shaking and the color is off. Apparently, it's something to do with eye sensitively relative to the technology they use in a DLP.

Copper/tin as conductors? Is a composite stick any better than a plastic stick? Please know what your talking about before posting hearsay your buddy who works at Circuit City installing car radios told you. Start here

then go here

then go tell Mr George Cardas and other manafacturers who have made millions that cables make no difference in audio/visual

I'm considering grabbing a TV which sounds similar to this one tomorrow on a Boxing Day Sale. Pretty well only care about the picture for XBox 360 and possibly some DVD's. How important are the cables for these purposes and how much should I be looking to pay for them (Cdn)? I'm terrible with these things, so I had trouble doing my own research.

How about you read my post first?

I'm talking about the fact that gold is by far the best conductor and whats the point in having copper or tin through the majority and an extremily small gold plated connector it's just like having your other metal all the way through.

I wasn't comparing copper and tin, and for the record I know copper is a much better conductor then tin.
