Blade lengths Selanne vs Nash and Modano

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have been attempting to find out what the max blade length of a stick is. I was watching the Columbus - Detroit game were the commentators mentions that Nash moved away from his blade to Selanne’s blade, Nash had commented that is had completely changed his game. One of the comments I remember was that it allowed Nash to have better puck control on bad ice. When I looked up the Selanne & Nash specs on the Pattern DB it states that Selanne uses a long blade and Nash has a medium. Looking at Selanne blade on TV is seems to be huge. Does anyone know or have spec of the Selanne blade? What is a long blade length in inches?

This is where Modano comes in. I have family friend that plays college hockey and presently uses the Modano blade. I know blade choice is a very personal thing but I hate the Modano blade I found it too short and hard to use. What I am hoping to do is find the Selanne spec so I can put a blade stick combination together and offer it to him to practice with to see if he likes it. I am confident that he would, because prior to going to the Modano he used and liked the Lidstrom. These two blades have nothing in common

Can you help me in my quest?

Not to be an ass, but, the NHL rulebook is online... "...nor more than twelve and one-half inches (12 1/2") from the heel to the end of the blade."

Anyhow, I'm wondering why you care what your friend uses. The way you wrote your post, it sounds like because YOU "found it too short and hard to use" that you want your friend to switch from it. How does this affect your buddy?

Anyhow, I used to have a game used Selanne sitting around. Bought it from Perani's a few years back. That blade is loooooooooooooooooong! Tall too! I'll see if I still have pics, or even the stick.

You've got quite a bit of a problem - almost all the curves (except for maybe the Special Make Up ones) listed in the Pattern DB are retail curves, not professional ones. Those are the ones that you'll buy in the store, not the ones that the pro's use. For example, Joe Sakic doesn't really use a retail Easton Sakic curve and Lidstrom doesn't really use the Lidstrom curve. (somebody correct me if I'm wrong)

However, some people here might actually have pics or own one of the pro-stock blades that you're looking for info on.

Oh yeah, maximum blade length is 12.5" in the NHL.

If a longer blade was scientifically proven to be superior, then everyone would be using the legal maximum length. Its personal preference, and by your friend using a Modano he is in no way "bottlenecking" his game.

I was hoping that the explaination of Nash switching to a Selanne blade explained why i was looking for a longer blade. As to my Modano comment it was simply to add context that i think it is too short an ineffective and was looking for better alternatives.

If you could provide pic of the selanne blade it would be greatly appreciated.

Knowing that pro stock is entirely different then retail could anyone make suggestions on a retail blade that is close to the Selanne.

Thanks

Length wise...Lidstrom. If you were to straighten Lidstrom curve... ;)

Your friend got to college hockey so I'd trust what his preferences are. If he likes an oar for a blade, ok, if he likes a putter for a blade, ok.

Mack

Your right his preference for now is the Modano, doesn't hurt to try different patterns. I don't think Nash was unhappy with his old pattern before he found he liked the Longer blade better.

not.

There's nothing wrong with trying a new blade but there is something wrong trying to get someone to try a new blade. Let them make that call.

on my titan woodie the Selanne blade is 11" long, about the same as a lidstrom. Couldn't tell you if it's the same curve as the Inno, which I'm assuming you're talking about.

I've got a pro-stock Mission blade I picked up from The Hockey Shop that's about 12" from the bottom of the heel to the farthest part of the blade. It's probably about as long as my old Bauer P10 Gagne.
