What is Todd Bertuzzi's worth?

Recommended Posts

Kuklas' Korner

from Bob McKenzie at TSN,

Every team in the league knows that Bertuzzi has a bad back, but the major issue so far is the asking price. The Panthers are trying to get top-end prospects like Jiri Hudler and Cory Perry for a guy that will become an unrestricted free agent in July and who has a bad back that might stop him from playing the rest of year.

What could happen at the deadline could be a soft deal for Bertuzzi, something like a conditional draft pick deal where the pick would improve based on Bertuzzi’s performance, the team’s performance or if he re-signs with his new team.

Will he command an overpayment like Forsberg?

Problem is those guys are NHL-ready/playing prospects whereas the Predators gave up one and I put an asterisk by his name.

Im not saying the Forsberg was the worst one sided deal of all time... Thornton trade and original Forsberg deal come to mind but trading a top level nhl ready prospect for a guy whos a shell of himself seems like an overpayment. Could Bertuzzi be a good pickup? Sure but he'll probably be playing soft like he has been since the Moore incident. The last thing the Wings need is another soft big man paired with Robert Lang.

Maybe the stars will align and Ryan Smyth will be traded.

I think any trade for Bertuzzi is overpayment. He's had at best a couple good seasons and that was simply because of the line he's on.

Sorry to jack the thread, but I saw a post above regarding Ryan Smith possibly being traded. Does anyone out there think the Wings will make a move for him. I think he would fit in great with the Wings. I just don't know who the Wings could offer up. Lang and someone, with maybe a 2nd round draft pick?

Smyth would cost ALOT... not to mention he'll command atleast $6 mill a season in the off season. The Wings need a scoring winger but Smyth basically plays Holmstrom's game. Smyth is pretty much the ultimate pickup but that'll mean Datsyuk is on his way out.

I would rather see the Wings make a push for Jagr if they're gonna give up the farm, Jagr is cheaper and hes signed.

Edmonton won't want someone making that much money coming back. Maybe a young defenseman and a pick.

Last I heard he was asking $5.25M

Last I heard he has been taking hometown discounts for the Oilers for years. Not to mention hes already gone to the media voicing his frustation with his lackluster pay. Especially when other players on the team are not producing and getting paid very well.

I've always thought the guy would look good on Sundin's wing. He is the type of guy who steps his game up when playing with great players. I think he would be a great guy for any playoff team to pick up, and parting with a good prospect would be fair payment. Hudler would be worth it, but I've yet to be impressed with him from what I've seen. Keep in mind I'm a sucker for a power forward, so I might be overvaluing Bert. Still, get him with an elite player and he becomes one of the best in the league.

Bert recently said he'd take a cut to come to Toronto.

As for payment, most talking heads I've heard say FLA wants a kings ransom, but nobody is willing to gamble on him for anywhere near the asking price.

I think at the time the caps dealt Adam Oates to the Flyers, it was probably one of the best deals they ever made.

Max Oullette at the time was a very highly touted goalie prospect, and they also got 2 first and 2 second round picks.

Also, the Caps/ Bruins trade for gonchar they got a first rounder, a second rounder and Shaone Morrisonn for him, the first rounder turned into Jeff Schultz and the second rounder is a russian prospect Mikhail Yunkov (know nothing about him)

Teams will overpay, hell, the caps got a 2nd rounder for Jeff Friesen last year, and he sucked it up bigtime

Jagr isnt going anywhere for a long time.

Jagr isnt going anywhere for a long time.

Jagr only has one more year guaranteed on his contract. There is then a player option for 08/09, but it's a trigger clause, he has to win an individual award, or the team has to advance to the conference championships for it to be picked up.

With the post lockout 24% rollback his current salary is $8.36 million, with $4 million of that being paid for by the caps.

So, you could have Jagr for $4.36 mil, for the playoffs, and next year, possibly one year after that depending on individual/team performance.

Thats not a long time, and not a lot of money. Jagr at $4.36 million is the best deal in the league (I feel a little bit dirty saying that, because I hate him, but it's true)

You're right about his remaining years but im pretty sure that Jagr's bonus year is the full $8 mill and isn't covered 50% by the caps. So yeah hes a steal now, he won't win another Art Ross with Crosby or a Rocket, he may get a Pearson.

Jagr at $4 mill sure, Jagr at $8 not so much.

Jagr isn't worth Brad Richards money???

Brad Richards isn't worth Brad Richards money

But no, hes not worth $8 mill a season to the Wings. Pavel Datsyuk is though

Jagr has a lot of bagage but at $4 mill its much easier to swallow. At $8 mill its not and I think Jagr is the best player in the league.

Caps are on the hook for $4 mil for every year on Jagrs existing contract, options included.

Ted said in an interview here (I'm in the DC area) that he hopes jagr does not hit the performance goals to trigger his option year so he can put that experiment (experiment was his word) behind him
