Player Equipment Bags

Recommended Posts

I have a Warrior Bag for lacrosse which looks to be the same materials as the Dolomite and Mac Daddy and it is a very nice constructed bag and very durable so I'm considering one of their bags for Hockey.

I've been using the heavy Itech BG-PRO for over a year now (got it cheap in online auction), and it's been a real solid bag. Only one complaint, but it's a significant one, is that the reinforced bottom is like having a 38x20 sheet of plywood across the bottom of the bag; no flexibility getting into trunk, going through doors, etc. I'd been thinking of having an MIA one made up, but might be afraid of finding out how much that would cost. For a temporary fill-in, I'm ordering the NikeBauer canvas bag in the junior size. Looks a lot like the canvas Gerry Cosby bags the Flyers Alumni use out of one rink I skate at. Since I'm mostly playing pick-up without shoulder pads and only bottom half of Tackla 5000X, the 36x15x15 junior size should work fine. Also, has adjustable shoulder straps and 'team' style features (all pockets on inside, no wheels, etc.). I've found it online for as low as $40, and the 40x18x18 senior size for under $50 (without shipping)

my friend has the gear bag from HG, i think it's $20. It's lasted him almost 2 years but the skate pockets have big tears in them... but he also jams his size 13 skates in there too.

I have a Gear bag from Hockey Giant I got for $20. It has skate holders, pockets on each end, and it's relatively durable. I don't beat mine up though. Not a lot of room inside but it gets the job done.

everyone I know who's owned a gear bag has busted a zipper or a seam within 2-3 months. I had one myself and busted both a seam and a zipper. If you take care of it, I'm sure it'll do the trick, but bags are pretty easy to abuse.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys.

I did end up ordering the Warrior Dolomite bag from ePuck; my LHS only had enormous bags (like, seriously, I could fit my goalie and his gear into these things) that wouldn't fit my trunk at all.

The Warrior bag is plenty roomy and so far I'm pretty happy with it; I'll use it for a month and then maybe post a real review.

Looks like a straight up copy of the Fury bag, which is also the same as the eagle pro player bag. The gear isn't the same material and is slightly smaller than the eagle or EWH bag by fury.

I'm loving my SMI bag.

Actually, all the companies you mentioned copied SMI. SMI has been selling this bag since 1994, which would place it in the marketplace before both Eagle and Fury were even companies.

Now that I looked around it seems as if the Eagle bag that was copied and same specs as the fury bag isn't being sold anymore.

I looked online and although they all look the same there are slight differences...

Dimensions:

SMI - 35 X 18 X 18

Fury - 36 X 17 X 19

Gear - 36 X 19 X 20(guess I was wrong, the gear bag is bigger)

Fabric:

SMI - 600 Denier Polyester

Fury - 1200 Denier Nylon

Gear - 1000 Denier Cordura

All have the same drain holes in the skate pockets but only the Fury has the vented top part of the pocket. Besides that the design is the exact same.

I have the fury bag and I bought it because of the fabric it uses, extremely heavy duty. The only things, in my opinion, that would make these bags better would be:

1) A U-shaped zipper opening, it's kind of hard to get my gigantic skates in the skate pockets.

2) An additional pocket, possibly on the top flap or front to put accessories in.

I like how the bag doesn't have protruding pockets but it could use an internal accessory pocket so I don't have to use a toiletries bag.

I'm sure the switch to cordura also improves durability. I'm sure that my fury bag will last years, the material is literally twice as thick as most bags on the market. How heavy is the poly compared to the cordura or nylon used in the gear and fury bags respectfully? My bag is quite heavy.

Thanks for clearing things up, I have no problem admitting I'm wrong for the sake of correct information!

UPDATE:

I got the NBH Canvas Bag 3 weeks ago in Jr. size (36x15x15). To refresh, I was coming out of Itech BG-PRO, 38x20x20, extreme reinforced bottom (which was fine for say traveling through the arctic fending off polar bears or some other animal like airport luggage crew - but otherwise WAY too cumbersome) which I was beginning to hate. The Nike is not as super heavy canvas as Cosby pro team bags I've seen nor looks like it could hold up to the abuse Mercury / Tonto can. But it seems heavier than most companies' regular 400 - 600 denier. Also it does have rubberized extra bottom reinforcement that is flexible and not ungainly like the Itech or TPS pro bags. One heavy zipper (straight, not D-shaped) with all pockets on the inside - and it has 6 large internal pockets! In the two ends are skate pockets and one side wall has two similarly constructed pockets (so you could put the skates in the inside sidewalls instead of the ends). The opposite side wall has similar pockets but with velcro closed flaps. Externally, a clear cover zippered ID pocket and adjustable shoulder straps (I really look for this so I can let the straps all the way out - hate short ones causing the bag to ride in my armpit) with a padded, velcro sleeve to join the straps. no end handles. the special order through lhs was under $50. So far I'm really liking this bag. I'm doing mostly drill sessions and light pick-up so I'm leaving at home the top half of my Tackla 5000x, shoulder pads, and caged helmet (but there's room left in the bag) - so in use it's been really light and convenient. I'm thinking of ordering a Sr. size (40x18x18) to keep the heavier gear for competitive play. Also a friend of mine likes this one and is thinking of getting the wheeled version (1 color set only in blk/wht/org but with D-shaped zipper opening).

Okay, so the tiny (30x14x14) duffel I've been using as my gear bag has finally burst its final seam, and can no longer be held together with duct tape and twine, which makes it time to buy a new bag. This time, for variety, I think I'll actually buy a bag designed for hockey gear. :P

Anyway, I'm not looking to spend a fortune ($50 or less), and it has to fit in my car's trunk, so it can't be larger than about 40"x18"x18".

I'd like to have separate skate pockets, good ventilation, and it needs to be durable; I don't want to have to buy another one any time soon, because buying bags is so much less fun than new sticks or skates. :D

Right now I'm leaning towards either the Warrior Dolomite bag (38x16x16) or the RBK 5k (40x18x16). Given that I can fit everything (sort of) in my current bag, either should be big enough for my gear. The RBK has end handles, which are convenient for hoisting it into and out of the trunk, but other than that they seem pretty comparable.

Does anyone have opinions about either bag, or any other bags in that size/price range I should consider? I couldn't find any topics about bags using the search, unfortunately.

When i clicked this thread i did not expect to get such discussions. That symbolizes real hockeygear geekness ;)

I personally got a bag and thats it. I hope you did NOT encourage me to buyy a new bag since mine is pretty old.

Third New Bag in since March(Warrior MacDaddy Equipment Bag):

About 2 1/2 weeks ago I purchased the Warrior MacDaddy Bag (it's the bigger version of the Dolomite Bag, and I can't stand it. Somehow it's height / length /width ratios make the bag balance poorly on my shoulder. It just feels more cumbersome than a loaded hockey bag should (probably like trying to carry a dead body in a suitcase...) or moving a large refrigerator, etc.

It doesn't have any useful inside pockets. The external skate pockets/goofy side pockets - if you take a look at both the MacDaddy and the Dolomite bag on warriorhockey.com are designed for a visual appeal since the curvature reduces functionality/ergonomics. Both of the side pockets are curved towards the center of the bag instead of having normal vertical access (probably part of the visual design) so to put your skates in or when you are trying to get something from inside the pockets requires you to either struggle reaching in around a curved surface area and pull whatever out against this extra resistance, or it requires more zipping open than necessary on most bags...for most convenience it necessitates opening both zippers up (depending on where you have the pair of zippers located). It has both a shoulder strap and two center mounted straps for carrying with your hands or Urkel pant type effect up on your shoulder (the opposite of Zakk Wylde and his guitar strap.

I noticed from "technophile's" post that he was looking for "good ventilation" which i thought meant he was looking for venting aside from the little drain type holes. The bag does not have a mesh area which roller guys especially should consider to help air out their equipment.

All in all I was very disappointed with the bag, and really should have known better than to purchase it - it was a spur of the moment impulse buy. Much of my disappointment was due to my own misjudgment especially considering that I was already considering purchasing a Fury, SMI, Eagle, or MIA "pro style" bag. The only gripe I have about most of those bags is what I think TBLFan also mentioned is the lack of a D-Opening. Those openings are very convenient, useful, functional manner not a fad type feature like a cell phone pocket or "special" mp3 player holder might be... so...if you aren't at all picky and just want the warrior logo on something other your sticks or gloves, etc. the macdaddy or the dolomite might be for you - but otherwise look elsewhere.

The Warrior bag is plenty roomy and so far I'm pretty happy with it; I'll use it for a month and then maybe post a real review.

that can be one plus, and in the macdaddy room is even less of a problem, but lots of bags out there have lots of room. There are a lot better choices out there, unless the looks, brand, etc. really grab you.

I got an Easton backpack bag. Holds everything and makes walking thru doors and past a mass of hockey players waiting to get on the ice easy!

RE: hockey backpacks - *sigh* I'm still not used to these.. I know lots of lils like using them...is this some kind of rebellion against the super liberal consumer advocates who first made a big deal about kids not using both straps because it would impair their spinal development, etc. (causing some manufacturers to put in warnings against the dangers of using one strap -OR - was this to rebel against those same liberals saying that kids should use wheel bags because using a backpack at all is dangerous...)

You should get an MSH bag.

I would but.... and I still will if given the opportunity...

Fabric:

SMI - 600 Denier Polyester

Fury - 1200 Denier Nylon

Gear - 1000 Denier Cordura

Like TBLfan, I also like the idea of heavier fabrics, but I don't know enough about materials to compare the weights in denier properly. I get it when comparing the same material, but Denier only tells you the weight, not the strength to weight ratio, pliability/flexibility, etc. - if you are comparing a given 600 denier polyester it is conceivable that it is stronger than 1000 denier Cordura (not that it is - since i've ever done the comparison or read something that did). Most people do know that just because something weighs more doesn't mean it is stronger (e.g. titanium v. steel). I wish I had complete accurate data of the comparison between Cordura, Polyester, and Nylon, and even the material that MIA is claiming to use : Tonto Polyester PVC coated, and Mercury 1000D polyvinyl.

I have the fury bag...

I like how the bag doesn't have protruding pockets but it could use an internal accessory pocket so I don't have to use a toiletries bag.

A couple of days ago (4th bag purchase in the last 2 months) was a Fury Bag that I saw at a LHS. I looked for it in their newest Fury catalog, but it wasn't there. Unlike the one TBLfan described this one does have an internal skate or accessories velcro pocket. This model is some kind of hybrid wheel/equipment bag. It's not as large as most wheel bags...it's about the size of a larger player's bag. It also has a clear ID Pocket, side handles for ease of loading in and out of trunks, wheels, two narrow rails to give structure to the bag's underside (i guess for wheel mode), and a textile/non-rigid handle. it does not have the rigid telescoping handle, nor does it have the heavy duty plastic skid plate that some wheel bags have in the wheel section or underside - this is nice because it keeps down weight. At first I didn't realize it was a wheel bag, and when i first found this out it actually almost stopped me from purchasing it until I realized it was essentially a pro style bag with wheels added on for when you are in old man mode. Hopefully, this bag will hold me over until I can get a MSH SMI Bag.

*Note: my bag before I started the bag buying spree was an Old Winnwell Bag (about 17 years old). The first attempt to replace it was with a simple Nike Bauer Bag (no internal pockets and one external pocket), next was a Graf bag, warrior's macdaddy bag, and finally the Fury One)

My bag does have the internal skate pockets but that's all. I don't/won't store anything in those pockets besides my skates. I would have liked them to have an added pocket somewhere in the bag for me to put other stuff.

can anyone give me more information on the warrior backpack? i am yet to see one in person. the easton backpack would definitiely be big enough, but i like the looks and zipper design of the warrior better. stating that the easton backpack is big enough for me, would the warrior also be big enough for full ice equipment?
