Full Finger v Split Finger

Recommended Posts

Okay, I think I've searched rather extensively on here using different search words, and haven't found a thread that specifically deals with the pros and cons of full finger gloves vs split.

The reason I ask is this...

I normally use TPS HGT PRO gloves with the split finger. Awesome and insanely comfortable. Now, I just bought a pair of those 'Pro Return' Eagle gloves on ebay from Goalie Heaven - CP95 / Eric Brewer.

Naturally, I assumed that they would come as split finger. The pic didn't really suggest otherwise, and when I looked at it again today, you can't tell. Well the fingers on the Eagle gloves are full. I am thinking about sending them back, but I love how long the cuff is. I think I'm just going to say screw it and use 'em.

So anyway, my question here is - what do you guys prefer? Split of full fingered? Does anyone even use full fingered gloves? Does it even matter to some? I'm just interested in getting some feedback. Thanks.

right now i go back and forth between a pair of eagle sentrys and hespeler rtx, both with full fingers. i dont mind the full finger on the sentrys, but i can not stand them on the hespelers. with that in mind, my next pair of gloves will have split fingers for sure. the thing i dislike the most is 3 piece fingers

i am a newbie to playing hockey, but i have used both kinds, and i really didn't notice the difference.

I mean in theory, you might have better grip with split finger. Or they might just make the glove break in less of an issue. I suppose there is a small chance that someones blade could get between the pads on a split finger. But i have to imagine the chances of that are pretty low.

I would say just try them out at home with a stick handling ball or something. If they feel awkward or you don't have the same grip send them back.

Honestly i can't imagine it makes a huge difference, but like i said i am new to the game and i am not that particular yet.

Here is a pic I just took with my phone of the Eagles.

I am completely psyched on how long the cuff is. I decided I'm just going to keep them. I'm going to use them for tonight's practice. There isn't much of a difference, really. The split TPS's are a little more flexible and a little softer.

with split fingers they already feel broken in, well at least the ones I've tried. With full it takes a bit of work... but once you get it broken in they feel fine. I'd prefer split but don't mind full in a quality glove.

Those are some really nice gloves half...

I like the split finger glove myself. Most of the new 07 Eagles now come with split fingers. I wear MIAs now....until the new Vector 10 comes out...

I got a pair of X70s a few months ago with full fingers. Every pair of gloves I previously wore had split fingers. At first the Eagles felt awkward, but they break in very well, and I have no issues at all closing my hand on the stick with them now. Are those nylon? If so, they should break in in no time at all.

Full fingers offer a bit more protection than split fingers as well.

I have full fingers. I love em, and I have no problem with them. That said I am getting XX's in 3 weeks. When I put the XX's on the only difference is more control in a sense. The XX's spilt fingers would be great if I was try to write something, though I am not, I am playing hockey. So my final conclusion is it is personal preference and both are great. You forget about it in the game.

Definitely a split finger man. Both my Easton 1300's and my Nike/Bauer Vapor XX's have the split finger design. The Vapors also have a hinged thumb which is an awesome feature as well. I find the split finger design gives you much more grip mobility than the solid design incoporated on a lot of the Eagle gloves.

my only issue is that some split finger gloves will almost roll over a bit when you close your hand, which might leave a space unprotected. This is why you need to try gloves on before you buy.

In my opinion, split fingers are more comfortable and easier to break-in than full fingers.

Tapering the fingers is the best glove concept since split fingers.

I ended up keeping the Eagles, and used them all last week for practice.

When broken in, they were just fine - and work really well. I don't even think about the full finger design. The palms are very soft, and grip just fine.

The one 'gripe' I have, if you could call it that, is that due to the longer length of the cuff, the elbow pads I use (Jofa 8066 Pro Return) sort of interfere with the glove cuff. No biggie, just had to adjust.

I'm pretty sure that TPS was the first to use the tapered fingers, and iirc they had a patent or some other governmental protection on the design. I believe the first gloves to feature them were the original Responses.

They are thinner at the tips than at the base of the hand allowing you to close your hand much more easily.

As mentioned, various TPS gloves have had them, they come on the new Eagle X72s and they have been a custom option on all Eagle gloves for years.
