What do *pro* players pay for?

Recommended Posts

I have heard comments about guys "buying" pieces of equipment, so I am assuming I am wrong about my assumption :)

I was always under the assumption the players got all their gear free or had an endorsement deal and actually got paid to use the equipment.

I figured team equipment(Tape, water bottles, warmups, hats, tshirts, etc) were all freebies for the team as well since those companies want advertising.

Whats the real story?

Is the AHL or ECHL different?

All the equipment they use during practices and games is paid for, but that doesn't stop a player picking up some equipment for summer skates or what have you. That is probably where you have heard of players buying equipment.

If the player wants something that's old stock and see it in a retail store, like Shanahan's old aluminum Eastons, for example, they will pay for it themselves.

Thanks for the information. I didnt realize the team actually paid for everything. I hope they get a special discount ;) So endorsed players get paid to use the equipment that the team pays for....wow!

Does anyone have an idea of how much a team spends in a season on equipment? Do they ever tell players to not use so many, or restrict them?

There was a link someone put on here about how many OPS's Heatley uses each season it's something like 1-2 per game I think (if I remeber correctly) the toal cost of his sticks was somewhere around the $50,000 mark for the season alone.

In Montreal during the summer, when Lecavalier needs new skates or any equipment he drives straight to RBK head office and picks up what ever he needs, for free I assume.

last summer he even tried to bake his own skates and ended up melting the blade! lol

I remember reading the same thing, but I didnt understand that came out of team money. I assumed that was what it would have cost if someone had to pay for it.

I wonder what player has the highest *cost*? (meaning team cost for equipment, equipment manager time, etc. no salaray) I wonder, because as a GM you might want to take that into consideration when doing contracts.....

No GM in their right mind will factor any of that into signing a player. All of those costs are nothing compared to the extra income from a single game, let alone a playoff run or a cup win.

He's CCM, right? I guess CCM=RBK isn't too much of a stretch.

Found out today that some superstars' budgets are not factored into the team budget - that way they control their equipment and why you don't see pro-return or their stuff at sales.

The stars limit their players to 250 sticks per year. They can then turn around and sell them in the official Starstuff stores and they get half the money from the sale. I dont know how it works for the superstars we have (we dont have any....).

On another note that someone touched on; Heatley is an Easton poster boy, he gets paid by easton to use their stuff. Do the Senators still pay for his stuff, or does Easton just ship it to him?

So you are saying that some superstars dont have the team buy their equipment, but they buy it themselves (or get an endorsement deal) and it is then theirs to do with as they please....

I wouldnt have thought that either....amazing....

(sidenote: JR...you must know everyone in the business, or someone that does ;) )

I was told that the team had to pay for em, mind you I'm sure they don't pay what me and you pay...

I'm pretty sure teams pay a fraction of retail, thats why some of that stuff sells dirt cheap...

He melted the blade, that's just stupid. The melting point of steel is 2,500 degrees F. For some reason I doubt his household oven can get as hot as a blast furance.

No, they pay wholesale. Just like a retailer.

The reason why that stuff sells dirt cheap is because they want to get rid of it.

Here is an article from the Rocky Mountain News about life on the road in the NBA. Talks about the per diem players get on the road, how they use it etc. Granted it is the NBA, and as I understand they have the highest per diem of all of the major sports, but you can get an idea. Pretty interesting read, things you don't often think about....

I thought the title said "What do pro players play for?" and was tempted to make a Don Cherry-esque jab at Euros. ;)

on that note, I did see a short clip of when the Penguins took their dads on the road for a weekend, and they did talk about their per diem. I think it was $92 a day, given to them when they walked on the plane.

Also, something to think about, these NHL teams will do the majority of their business with 4 companies, to the tune of $50-70k each, which is more than what MOST retail stores would spend with those companies (DS50 and jimmy, I'm sure you are exceptions).

The $350K equipment budget is an interesting figure when thinking about how the equipment manager has to manage his inventory and inventory $$s. Since I buy at wholesale, not pro pricing these are interesting numbers to consider. The pro team roster size is also a factor based on 20,25 players per roster. Each player(based on 25) averages $14K in equipment budget. the goalie is more and Cam Janssen with his Sher-Wood 5030 tradition shoulder pads is way less. Also, factor in the Brendan Shanahans and Chris Chelios guys who haven't had new shoulder pads in 20 years!! The monopoly of the 4 equipment suppliers is another piece of the puzzle. Even at retail when a vendor says the product is out of stock, there are not a lot of other vendors to jump in. Only a few and if you need a specific item(Tuuk holder, CCM Performance steel runner as an example), its easy to be SOL.
