Friction tape on blade or regular tape with wax?

Recommended Posts

I've been using friction tape for a while but I have been noticing that most guys just use the regular cloth tape and put on stick wax or right guard deodorant.

What are the differences for those that have used both?

Friction tape is a lot thicker than normal cloth tape and it does usually last a little longer for me. The down side is that it can detract from the feel a little bit on a composite blade because of the thickness.

I like regular with wax, I use a lot of tape and wax and a heat gun to melt them together. I don't like the weight or feel of friction tape.

Does heating it work better? I have always rubbed it in by hand and thought about heating it but never did.

I melt the wax on the tape, then rub more wax, heat again, add a third layer of wax.

^ holly shit , that must add alot of wight.

I do the same thing (only 2 layers). The wax I use isn't like sex wax, its more of a jelly. Its very light and soaks into the tape very easily with my heatgun.

Why do you have to use wax? Just tape it up with normal cloth tape.

It makes tape last longer.

I'll make sure the whole blade is covered in Mr Zoggs wax...I can get a few skates out of a tape job, push and nicks back and re-wax. Not to mention keeping moisture away from the wood blade. Doesn't add too much weight. The heat gun melts the wax into the tape and helps preserve the ridges instead of just covering them up.

Layer of cloth tape along the bottom, apply wax(Mr Zogg's sex wax) and melt it in. Tape from heel to toe(for composite blades) and apply a lot of wax, melt it in. Let it cool down. Apply final coat of wax over the blade getting any missed spots and making sure that the bottom of the blade is thick with wax, melt it in and done... Still lighter than friction tape and will last longer too.

Do you think I could use a regular candle wax, I have one of those candle-lite aromatic candle that just laying around so I was wondering if i could put it to good use. Would it be the same?

No but some people use candle wax. Wax varies, sex wax is basically a cold water surf wax. Some people prefer warm water surf wax, but others say that the wax just gets hard and brittle. It's another thing that's just personal preference. Try it out and let us know what YOU think.

I've been on a white cloth tape kick on the blade.

That could work. Also those tea lite candles work well.
