The End of Stanley Cup Playoff Overtime?

Recommended Posts

Here is an interesting article that even has the Brendan Shanahan seal of approval. Hey, Shanny are you nuts? Just how many times have you been hit in the head? Fortunately, Martin Brodeur thinks the shoot-out is no way to end a playoff game.

Read on.

I do understand Shannys reasoning fr suggesting it and even agree to a point. OT hockey gets boring because teams are so afraid of screwing up that they don't try to score. The game becomes boring quite often and it seems like any game that goes into OT is destined for 2 or 3 extra periods. I don't think going to 4 on 4 will change it all that much. Teams are still going to preach patience over pressure because that pressure can backfire. That said, I'm not in favor of shootouts in any way, shape or form in the playoffs.

Could part of the problem be that Shanny is getting older and he doesn't want to be forced to play games that last 5 or 6 periods? It would also really benefit his current team who has lots of top end talent, where a deep team like Buffalo would be hurt by this type of change.

That's nice. Years from now the Stanley Cup playoffs changed because Bert selling hot dogs at the concession stand had to leave to get to his other job washing dishes at the diner. Great thinking.....

NBC also complained that the game/s were going into their regular broadcasted shows....Sorry, Barbaro "A Nations Horse."

BTW- The main reason it will probably eventually change is because of the people it effects. The people behind the scenes at the areanas who have quite a few jobs at times and cannot afford to stay at a game for 2-3 extra hours. This according to Pierre, at least

But they wouldn't care if it is a Yankees-Bo Sox playoff game that goes 15-16 innings....it's not that their regular programming was disrupted...it's that it was disrupted for HOCKEY that is the problem for them.

If it had great ratings, they wouldn't care how long it lasted. The Barbaro thing was essentially a promo for the upcoming triple crown season.

The only change I would like to see is to get rid of the sudden death. I'd like to see them play until a period ends without a tie.

Worst. Idea. Ever.

I'm pretty sure I saw bettman on espn (Mike & Mike show?) the day after the triple OT game with vancouver, and Bettman was asked this question and he said that they aren't going to eliminate OT...As stated above im PRETTY sure, not positive on this statement

I don't think I've ever watched an overtime where I have gotten bored. Overtime is intense enough, we don't want fans to have heart attacks.

Agree 100%, watching the sabres rangers OT the other day reminded me why OT hockey is the best hockey.

Yeah, this is ludicrous. I heard about this awhile ago, but it kinda fell under the radar because the playoffs hadn't started yet. Can you imagine The Cup being decided in a Game 7 OT by a Rory Fitzpatrick shoot-out goal?

I also agree that it's kinda funny that older players (Shanny and Brodeur) are the ones supporting this.

I also think that it comes down to money. The league wants to sell the game to the networks, but none of the networks want to pick up a game that could go that long. No commercials in OT means less advertising and less $$$. It's a money thing.

This game has changed, and not for the good.

I will lose a lot of respect for the league if they decide to put shootouts in OT. Probabley the worst idea the league has come up with.

I don't have a problem going to 4-on-4. Even when played conservatively, one poke check can quickly change into a 2-on-1.

What I would detest is a shootout. What a thoroughly unsatisfying way to decide a game -- regardless whether soccer has done it for years.

what's up silver goals? i wasn't happy when they changed it from golden goal to silver in soccer. they need to keep OT the way it is.

TSN is doing an online poll during the Buf-NYR game.

poll is at tsn.ca if you are interested. And, they will be putting the question to the NHL GM's as well...they will give that result tomorrow.

They do shootouts in the Olympics. Do you hate that too?
