Looking for feedback on "myhockeyspace.com"

Recommended Posts

Hello MSH! We are finally launching myhockeyspace.com and would love feedback!!! We will launch it fully June 1 but would like MSH members to see what's coming first and get your thoughts now!

Thanks in advance for your comments. The site will evolve over the next two weeks, so we look forward to all your thoughts.

Myhockeyspace.com will be a social networking site geared specifically for hockey players, fans, enthusiasts, coaches and teams. If anyone has experience with those types of sites, I'd be eager to hear how we can improve ours.

By the way, we are looking for bloggers for next year for each of the 30 NHL teams. As a blogger you will be given a VIP status to the site and have all access. Free online magazine, daily newsletter and select tickets to games for your team. Any takers?

Very neat idea, but isn't this exactly what MSH accomplishes?

agreed.. i'll stick with what works. B)

Based on conversations I've had with some of the Mods, they're quite a bit different. I've heard the Mods say their goal is to become the Consumer Reports of the hockey industry. I've also heard them say they sometimes wish they didn't have the Misc discussions area, since it can cause arguments and is peripheral to the goal of feedback on hockey equipment.

On the other hand, MyHockeySpace is a hockey-specific, social networking site. Players will be able to post their stats/pictures/videos. They'll be able to communicate directly with other hockey players, versus just responding to posts, as we're doing now. They'll be able to use it as a means to alert coaches to their achievements.

Even further, down the line, there is supposed to be an advisory board of former (and maybe current) NHL players who will share their advice. I can tell you that one ex-player who everybody liked has told Kerry, "Gouche, I love the concept. No matter what happens, I want to the be the spokesman for MyHockeySpace."

Yet, having said all that, I probably won't be on MyHockeySpace much, because I'm not into social networking over the internet. However, is I was born twenty years later and was into hockey, I'd be on it all the time.

Under the premise that Kerry is looking for feedback before going fully live:

The intro page has been inconsistent. Sometimes it goes straight to the Home page (as it did today), sometimes it goes to the Chalk Talk page where it's looking for feedback, and sometimes it loops into a page saying I need the latest version of Flash (as it did last week, when I upgraded, but asked for it again last night).

Quibbling, but I'd line up the left two columns in the first page. They're off my a smidge, and it affects my sensibilities. :D

I don't visit Facebook or MySpace, so I don't have the right basis for comparison, but it seems as though more information needs to show at a glance on the Profile page. It takes too many clicks to get to each player's "story."

The navigation through the Profile has to be streamlined. I'd suggest an alphabet across the top, so I could click on Q to get to Quniton. The numbers need to incrementally increase. What I mean is if I'm on page 17, then maybe pages 14, 15 and 16 would be to the left on the scroller bar, while 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 would be on the right. Then if I click on 21, each of the numbers would increase by four.

I could also possibly be a blogger for the Blue Jackets or Blackhawks. If you could PM me some more information, that would be great. Thanks. (More so the Blackhawks to be honest).

the index page is too busy.

the login and register stuff should be the first thing you see. Take some design cues from myspace/facebook and whatever the hell else is out there.

Make it as simple as possible if you want people to use it.

And yeah i ran into some bad links too, get some people to click through and correct those.

I partially agree.

Kerry would occasionally send mock-ups to ask for my opinion. Generally, I'd tell him it just looks too busy. However, after some of the changes made, I think it's relatively clean for its purpose. What I mean is I think that MyHockeySpace is going to provide more content to its community than what I understand MySpace does. For instance, I mentioned ex- (and possibly current) NHLers will be blogging with the community, so I think some of the links on the index page are to access the blogs. Having said that, maybe MySpace offers the same thing and MHS should clean up its format to match.

Were there particular links you had trouble accessing? I'm sure the programmers would appreciate knowing.

Great feedback, thank you. I will talk with our designer tonight about making the registration a little more dominate without taking a way from the look.

Also thanks for the response to blogging, fantastic. As to being the same as MSH, I think if you look closely myhockeyspace.com will be more of a portal and have information about all aspect of hockey including up to the minute details of pro hockey and poolie reports. MSH is the absolute best resource for equipment reviews on the planet and we will only use their expertise. Myhockeyspace will have instant updates of professional hockey around the globe along with a retail component second to none. On top of this we will have NHL players and former pro players available for one on one chats throughout the hockey season. Keith Primeau, Wayne Primeau, Steve Thomas, Doug Gilmour, Ron Ellis, along with several others have already signed on to our site.

No promotional code is required yet but Chadd and JR will be given a code for all the members to gain all access status in the very near future.

again, I have to say it's too busy. First look, I should be able to get the basics without having to read the whole page... The trick is to section parts off better, it's almost like being overwhelmed with information. Keep the home page simple and go from there. It's always better to get the basics down and let users "discover" features as they go as opposed to throwing all the features at them before they even register.

I had the same issue when I tried with Firefox 1.5.0.11. With IE 6 it worked ok.

It worked. They must have fixed something.

In case you want some input for the site:

You need to add a textbox for the Province. I cant pick my own so now im from Alberta, Germany.
