Training in the off-season

Now that my season is almost over I've turned to thinking about getting in shape for next season.

I'm carrying a bit of excess weight, so thats the first thing that needs to go, Im looking to lose around a stone. I'm also looking to build up my stamina and also strengthen my arms.

Ive started going to the gym regularly, doing alot of cardio and a small ammount of weights.

Just wondering if anyone on here has any recommendations / regimes to help get me in better shape.

Also my diet is pretty poor, what should I be eating? Is there any do's and dont's I should I follow (besides all the obvious: ie takeaways etc)

try to run everyday (even if its for only 20 minutes)

as for diet, cut out all junk foods (especially mcdonalds) and focus on eating low carb foods (ive read on a few websites that carbs prevent fat from being burned), such as chicken, whole wheat grains and lots of fruits and veggies.

To strengthen your arms, just have a good workout routine that gets your bi's, tri's and sholders involved (push press, shrugs, hammers etc. Look on body building.com for good variety of excersizes).

I reckon that you need to combine both the right diet and cardio. I've found that circuit training really drops your weight fast, and so does boxing/skipping.

Try a combinaiton of that, and you should be alright.

Go on to 3-5 mile runs 3-5 times a week for stamina, protein drinks, meal replacement and work out twice as more

wost call ever for hockey...you need a mix of anaerobic and aerobic exercises

Well the best way to train for anything is simply to do it. So in this case it would be to play hockey. Obviously it's probably not possible to play hockey every day for most people and it would cut you out of benefits that cross training provides. As such your best bet would be a mix of skating, endurance cardio, sprint and other anaerobic conditioning, polymetrics, targeted weight lifting, and a good nutritional plan.

Hey guys, I have been getting alot of personal messages so instead of responding to every single one I figure I would just let everyone know whats going on. I talked to my coach Friday and he said I would be having all the stick, equipment and workout info sometime this week. As soon as I get the information I will get it out to everyone who has asked. Any other questions just let me know.

Just a question, how often do you guys work out? I work out once every other day. For example Tuesday- lower body Wednesday- break Thursday- Upperbody. For some reason I dont feel this is enough, and im aiming to do upper one day, lower next day, upper day after that, ect. What do you think?

I've been on the Westide For Skinny Bastards Program. It's working really well, my lifts have consistantly gone up each week so far. Heres what I do:

Monday: Max Effort Upper Body and HIIT on the bike

Tuesday: Max Effort Lower Body

Wednesday: Speed/Agility training (sprints, jumprope, agility ladder)

Thursday: Repition Upper Body

Friday: HIIT on the Bike (In a month when It gets nicer and my overall fitnbess level is up I'll do sled work on this day)

Sat and Sun - Off or Active Rest

It is such a great feeling, noticing being very fit and being better than schedule, means that i am actually even fitter than i thought i'd be. Sometimes doing more on your own does work wonders.

Depends on which ones you mean. The Strength, Conditioning and Injury Prevention for Hockey by Horrigan and Kriess is very good. Anything by Tudor Bompa is excellent. Peter Twist's stuff is ok. There is an Ultimate Guide series that is absolute garbage, avoid it like the plague.

Thanks a lot. Normally Excelfiles are known as .xls to me, but it worked.
