Summit Series II

Recommended Posts

RDS reports that Hockey Canada and the Russian Hockey Federation will apparently announce a second summit series but this time it will be between players of junior age and not pro players. Everything should be announced this saturday in Moscow. A report was also posted on it in the La Presse paper, at this moment I have not found an english link.

Cool idea but nothing will ever compare to the original one. Nobody knew russians could play hockey and Russians didn't know Canadians were bullies like that.

They were closing schools for the games in 72 in my city. One of the best hockey memories my dad has.

nobody knew the soviets could play? dunno about that... not like they were coming off their 3rd gold medal in a row...

that said it obviously won't be the same, but that doesn't mean it wont be entertaining or competitive...

don't they already have something like this, namely when the russian prospects come over and play all star chl teams? and don't we already have the world juniors, where russia and canada both play in? what's the point in this? there'd be just too many games, with the same players, so there'd be no drama or unpredictability

I really didn't know that (the 3 soviet gold medals). Were professionals playing in those tournaments?? I think that may have been an issue.

Nonetheless, the Canadian confidence was very high. It was suppose to be a walk in the park for us with the "dream team" we had. The soviets came here with no big names and surprised Canada with a 7-3 win because of their relentless playing style. Cold shower on the entire country.

Quoted from wikipedia:

This general scheme—of the Canadians playing well initially but declining near the end of the game due to insufficient physical conditioning—was to be a common feature of the series. Another difference was that the Soviets stayed in peak physical condition all year round, while the Canadians had a summer offseason and relied upon the last-minute training camp to get back in shape.

Talk about devaluing the original series.

...oh, and i agree with that. The idea isn't that bad but naming it Summit Series II is just ridiculous.

I can't read that. Is there one in another language?

http://www.tsn.ca/canadian_hockey/news_sto...canadian_hockey

... If I weren't so lazy, I would have looked for one in Russian just to be a smartass.

thanks, but if you did it would be nice since I would be able to read that too.

I thinks it will help Russian youth to get exposed to more hockey but it will never be the Summit Series of the past.

Yes, the Canada Russia Challenge happens every year with the WHL, OHL, AND Q each playing a pair of games against the Russian selects. The series is a real joke though, because the Russians never send even close to their best team over, and the CHL goes 6-0 and whoops them every single game.

so what? do you honestly think there'd be that substantial of a difference between the best possible team they could send over, and the teams they have been sending? keep in mind, neither team is guaranteed to send the best they can, as players have a right on whether they want to go or not. i'm sure after playing a full season, possibly world juniors, the russia/canada selects, playoffs, and maybe memorial cup, i doubt many would want to go and play an additional tournament.

They would decide to go if they wanted to be on the world jr. team. Hockey Canada, and the Russian Hockey Federation are both pretty insistent on things with (particularly junior) players when they want something. I believe Hockey Canada has a mandatory camp in the summer for all the players they're considering for the team, and another one for tryouts right before the tournament - I think they left Jay Bouwmeester off the team one year because the Panthers would only release him for the tournament, but not the tryouts or something like that. They're very specific about what players have to do, and where they have to be. I'm sure the Russians are the same way, and if they're not, they will be soon with the way they've been changing their hockey establishment (ask Alexander Semin how he enjoyed the World Championships). I'm certainly not saying they should do that, or even that the series is a good idea (it isn't), but if Canada and Russia want the best players to be there, and they tell them they have to go or be left off the World Junior team; I don't think very many players will stay home from the fake Summit Series.

they still can't force them to go by blackmailing them by saying they won't be on the world junior team. i know about the mandatory camps and all, but if an excellent player refuses to go to this summit series because he's burnt out, and canada rejects him from the world juniors because of it, it's canada suffering, not the player.

Since the Canadian junior team have had three straight undefeated tournaments, and haven't been out of the gold medal game since 2001, I tend to think that:

- there's enough depth in the major junior system that they can afford to leave a couple of players off the team to send a message if they want to.

- Hockey Canada holds all the cards with those players - they all want to be on that team and have a chance at winning the world juniors - most of them having grown up watching the tournament and dreaming of it since they were kids. If they have to do something to be on that team, they're going to do it. Not to mention that they shouldn't want to start any controversy or public dispute with the Hockey Canada people - maybe they wouldn't threaten them with this, but the same organization that picks this team, and the world jr. team will be picking the Olympic teams, and World Cup teams later in their career. If an Olympic selection in 2014 or something comes down to a guy that went to the summit series when asked, and a guy that refused; my money is on the guy that played... So no, Hockey Canada can't MAKE anybody play, but it would certainly be in a player's best interest to play if they were asked to be on the team. Maybe they won't explicitly state "Play in the Summit Series, or you won't be on the World Junior team" - but I certainly don't doubt it will be implied, and I think the players are smart enough to know that refusing to play in this won't help them make an impression for the future when they do want to be on Team Canada.

... And since the tournament will be in September, I don't think anyone can say they're burnt out. I know they train hard in the summer, and they have a long season ahead of them, but the seasons only get longer if they make the NHL, so if they're going to be in the NHL, they need to be preparing for it now, and showing that they're highly conditioned, top-level players right now.

The first games of the series will be held Aug. 27 and 29 in Ufa, which is about 1,300 kilometres east of Moscow. Games 3 and 4 will be played on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 in Omsk, which is another 1,300 kilometres east of that.

The games in Canada will be played in four different cities on Sept. 4, 6, 8 and 9. The series will involve a lot of travelling

is this going to be on tv?

Payperview in the states for hockey? I highly doubt it.

If your lucky tsn may broadcast it live on their website.

And if all else fails, grab a 24 cross the border ring any doorbell and make a new friend. :)
