Bubble Hockey

Recommended Posts

The town I grew up in is putting forward plans to erect a bubble ice hockey rink. I know there are a handfull (or more) in Canada and some in the northern states. I was wondering what your experiences were with them and what there pros and cons are. Also, if you have any links to Bubble rinks that would be great.

this team plays at one, those are pictures from their games, you can kinda see it in some.

here is a picture where you can see the bubble. its a pretty bad rink and i guess it gets real foggy in the summer... maybe you've been there since you live in manhattan, this rink is in freeport, long island.

I got my start in that rink in freeport...it was fog city. Tryouts in the fall consisted of more laps to lift the fog then drills or scrimmaging and the same went for spring clinics too. But during the winter it was a decent rink, except for when it snowed a lot and collapsed.

the worst was, for some insane reason they started a roller league there for a summer or 2 on the concrete under the ice. I don't think I've ever skated in a rink that hot, you would lose about 10 pounds a game in water weight.

I believe there's a steel structure supporting the bubble.

I'm sure they get a bit of greenhouse effect in there in the summer though, as there's nowhere for hot air to go.

ive played in the ice hutch in mt. vernon which was a complete bubble and actually wasnt too bad and ive played in a rink in yonkers which was basically out doors and the fog there was ridiculous. we won a playoff game on a dump in cuz the goalie couldnt see the puck

We have one up here. I don't like playing on it though because the ice is really soft. I don't know if it has anything to do with the bubble, but the other indoor rinks up here have a lot nicer ice.

Soft ice, most of the time, is due to impropper cooling. Usually the colder the ice tempurature the harder the ice. It could be their refrigeration sucks or just all the heat is too much.
