Slappers or no slappers

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I was reading the injury thread below, and it got me wondering...do you guys play with slap shots when you play pick up? We generally have an understanding in the groups I play with...you and the goalie with no one in between load up if you want to...but no slappers if there is a crowd. The players in our groups range in age and ability from 17-18 right up to one guy who's in his 70's. Some guys are/were really really good others are liek me...pick up guys exclusively.

There is one goalie who doesn't like slappers at all, mind you he's in his 50's and had a heart attack during a game a couple years ago. Although he bitched about slappers even before that.

What do you guys do with pick up games and slap shots?

If we aren't equiped, only if your alone with the goally and the closest skater is 15 foot away. If we are equiped yes.

We always play with slapshots. Everyone that I play pickup with wears their equipment. There has never been a problem that I can remember.

Since you mentioned equipment, I guess that is a factor too. I wear full gear, but I play with lots of guys that don't wear shoulder pads...oddly it is the guys that usually don't wear full gear and wind up the best.

I only take full ones in games or if nobody is between me and the goalie. I love to fake them and hit a guy standing on the back door for the tap in. The ones that hurt the guys weren't full -on slappers.

I play inline so I never wear shoulder pads anyway, but I almost never wear elbow pads either becuase I hate the damn things so much.

At pick up in York they let kids on the ice with adults, they say 13 is the cutoff but I've seen younger. It takes the fun out of the game when you can't do anything out there. I had a parent bitch at me because her son skated into one of my wristshots and I knocked the cage off his helmet. I couldn't see him through the bodies and I was going top corner.

If soem people don't wear thier shoulder pads then I dont take slappers. I don't want to hurt anybody.

I haven't worn shouldies in about 6 years. No matter what Im playin.

Don't worry about hurtin someone, its entirely their responsiblity. If I get hit I can't be overly mad at you, its my choice.

No, usually in a pick up game, or shinny, I would never cock back if there is anyone in front of me. Just respect, cause Ive been dinged and its not cool when you are out playin around.

It's even less fun when the idiots don't get off the ice. There's always a few guys who forget that there's another 10 guys on the bench who also paid money and want to get their share of icetime.

Most of the pickup groups I've played with the past several years allowed slappers when completely clear, otherwise no. I know of at least one rec. league that allows slapshots.

I was hit in the glove by a slapper I just wandered into when I first started hockey. Somehow the puck hit the backhand of the glove and made a small fracture in my 1st thumb joint. It wasn't that serious fortunately, but had the shot been a bit higher, yikes! And I was wearing el-cheapo shoulder pads when I started out, too... I felt lucky to have come away with as much as I had, could have been much worse.

Around here there isn't a "no slapshot" rule. Every once in a while a person will let one go just out of boredom and on a breakaway or something. It's mostly just Hero's who try and go end to end everytime and copy moves the group I'm with will do. Seems like the better players never shoot the puck around here, yet the middle tear never gives it up.

Hmm, I never thought of shoulder pads as protecting against slappers. I figure as long as they are wearing shin guards it is fair game.

I have never played a game in my life where I have worn shoulder pads. Of course I only play inline though.

Funk:

We had a goalie filling in for us as ours was sick and I dinged him in warm ups. I took a wrister from the top of the circle and it hit the post, came back and nailed him in the palm of the blocker.

The best was when I broke my goalie's wedding ring. He's happy because he doesn't have to wear it anymore. That was a glove save gone awry.

his wife must have been pissed off though...

when we play pickup, we just kinda know not to shoot when there's someone in front of you. we play with tshirt and shorts though, and the goalie's got like practically no padding, so it's the only safe thing to do

Chadd:

OW. How was goalie #1, broken hand? Goalie #2, broken hand? Rings and impact on fingers, could be bad if it's a direct hit.

Now that you mention it, I think why some groups don't allow slapshots is to avoid these odd deflections that go who-knows-where real fast (read Stevie Y.).
