Saving skate edges

Recommended Posts

When I was working at the hockey expo in St. Paul a couple of years ago a salesman came up and was pitching a product to me. It was a hard rubber sheath that you stuck on the bottom of the goalpipe to protect the goalies skates during practice. It seemed like a nice inexpensive way to keep the goalie from blowing out and edge every other day.

Now that I'm working for a team and both my goaltender are using a 7/16" hollow, I'd like to find those guards again so I'm not sharpening their skates every single day. I don't want to go through two sets of cowlings again this year.

Does anyone happen to know what the name of the guards are or where I can find a couple of sets? I've been trying to hunt them down and I'm not having any luck.

Thanks.

No, its something we'd snap on and off just for practices. They can muck their skates up for games, that doesn't bother me to have to fix.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I've seen the product. I'll do some research and see if I can get you a vendor.

What I meant was, if you had nets at the rink specifically for practice, you could rubberize them w/ Tool-Dip.

I'll try to find you those sleeves today.

Thanks! We've been trying to hunt those things down for awhile now. We need to get two pair, one for each net. The kicker is that I had a set from the expo and I threw them away when I moved thinking I'd never use them. Whoops...

This is going to sound stupid, because I have limited experience on ice...

What does it mean when you blow out your skate edge? I used to think it ment you lost your edge and slipped, and now I'm thinking it's when you get it really banged up or something. Clarification?

yeah, rbk steel never get's dings or dents! I highly recommend it.

RBK steel is great, best steel on any goal skate... but it will lose an edge if you scrape it against the pipes, I do it all the time. That's just part of being a goalie. The good thing about the rbks is that the steel can be sharpened many more times than plane ol' carbon steel, and when you need to replace it, you don't have to replace the cowling, just the steel.

Jimmy's right - I should have specified. You'll almost never get a 'ding' to your blade with the RBK stainless steel from hitting your blade into the post, but if you scrape it along the pipe, as Jimmy says, you'll lose the edge.
