Crosby named team captain

Because they've failed wearing the C means Sid will?

Its really a time will tell type of situation. The Pens will know whether it was a good move or not about 1/4 way throug the season.

Problem with that being that at that stage, they can't take it from him.

The league is selling itself on the back of crosby. He is for all intents and purposes the NHL.

If the pressure of being the most publicized face in a struggling league is hard, and then the additional pressure of being the youngest captain in league history starts to wear, he will not be able to relinquish it.

The league can't afford for him to have a chink in his armour just yet. They need him to be the ideal player, captain, and PR rep for the entire league in the US.

He is only 19, and while he may seem mature, he is still only 19, and kids at that age, if they are forced to be perfect, are more succeptible to breaking down, which is why I think Thornton and LeCav were not ready for captaincy.

That being said, I don't know who else they should have, but if he can't hack the pressure of the captaincy, then he is in a bind

Its just a letter, he's been the captain of that team all season long through his actions. They didn't look to Malkin or Recchi, they looked to Sid to pull them through a game or score the big goal. I personally think if Recchi wasn't retiring after this season that he should get the C, but he is about out of gas.

He's used to the pressure, he's used to the media, and he relishes in it. He has since he was a (younger) kid.

If you think about it, the teams like the Pens, Sens, and Sabres are the NHL. They play the game the way the NHL wants to market it. Fast paced and high scoring.

I dunno, I just don't think this letter is going to affect too much. He's still going to put up 100+ points, he's still going to be the player thats in the media most often, and he'll still be the main guy the team looks to when they're down a goal in the third.

That may all be true, but he is still a 19 year old kid, so he is still a guy that the 30 something vets will be able to intimidate, still a guy that can show signs of not being fully matured (which is fully understandable, I don't expect him to be), and shows signs of being someone who can be shaken into looking like a whiner and a diver, both of which he improved on this year, but still lapsed from time to time.

He does that while wearing a C and he will get scrutinized even more for his actions, thats part of wearing the C

After 2 years in the NHL, I don't think Sidney Crosby is intimidated by anyone.

I didn't say intimidated, I said he can be shaken, so he looks like a whiner or a diver.

Couple of times when he took a hard hit, instead of skating back to the bench/back to the play, he went to the officials.

I know he was wearing an A, but wait to play stops, then tell the refs to "look out for hatchers stick" or something, not skating behind them yapping while the game continues

Smoky,

I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth.

 As denny crane would say, it's the mad cow.

I actually didn't mean intimidated in the traditional sense, I meant shaken into getting off his game rather than frightened, but apparently I did say intimidated

Like many other players, he can be knocked off his game at times by cheap shots and even good, hard hockey. When he learns to let it roll off his back and use it as motivation, he will become even more dangerous.

I think the general consensus is that even though Crosby tends to sometimes get rattled by cheapshots he still manages to put up amazing numbers. I don't think he'll go the route of Lecavalier/Thornton and suffer after getting the 'C' at all. If anything, I see him as a Yzerman/Sakic-like captain who grows with the organization in Pittsburgh.

I believe he will leave Pittsburgh when he becomes unrestricted as he will have much better off-ice endorsement opportunities in other markets. Put him in Montreal and they are the ones on HNIC every week and not the Leafs.

I think Mario has him locked in pretty well, I mean he lives with the guy for god sakes! He's also captain of a team that looks to be very successful in the near future.

crosby captain ?

wow what is the nhl coming to

crosby doesnt deserve to be a captain he is prob the worst professional sports icon and role model

( he could be a good icon if u envy people who are cry babies and poor sports)

just watch this video...it explains alot sidney crosbys character and poor sportsman attitude

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=82...h&plindex=1

just cuse all the disgusting crosby fans worship him and treat him like he is god doesnt mean he can lead a professional hockey team

haha sidney crosby...

what a jokeeee

As if he is the only pro athlete to use the work "fuck." Please............

The point was that he still acts like a petulant child. While he may be the most talented player in the league, he hasn't earned the right to be a leader.

exactly he isn't mature enough to lead a nhl team

As if he is the only pro athlete to use the work "fuck." Please............

Funny, considering that guy whined a whole lot more than Crosby ever did right there...

very true, most likely he is a bender who can only wish to be Crosby

It's probably Avery, he's got nothing better to do in the off season.

It's probably Avery, he's got nothing better to do in the off season.

and yet, from october thru may, they pay him to play hockey. can you say the same?

Moral of the story: taking potshots at Avery is just as childish as taking potshots at Crosby or anyone else.

I think most people take shots at crosby simply because he's not on their team and everyone else loves him. Avery on the other hand has a bad attitude, a big mouth and isn't all that great of a hockey player, so people take shots at him because he thinks hes such hot shit.

It's also childish defending a professional athlete you've never met. Especially considering I was joking. Sarcasm? www.dictionary.com

willy,

you'd better believe it.

Avery = God :angry:

Hockeyman,

Dictionary.com on "sarcasm", as per your suggestion.

sar·casm /ˈsɑrkæzəm/ [sahr-kaz-uhm] –noun

1. harsh or bitter derision or irony.

2. a sharply ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark: a review full of sarcasms.

no, it doesn't seem to be that.

Dictionary.com on "potshot"

pot·shot also pot shot (pŏt'shŏt') n.

1. A random or easy shot.

2. A criticism made without careful thought and aimed at a handy target for attack: reporters taking potshots at the mayor.

hmm. yes, that does seem to describe your original post quite well, as it was both random and aimed at someone who is an easy target seeing as he gets so much guff around here (and around the league). Somehow I don't think much thought went into it either.

Oh, and I never claimed to NOT be childish.

for the mods: I won't be taking this any further, so that it won't have to be locked on account of childish banter ruining it. I'd like to see it stay open and the original topic revisited sometime during the upcoming season.
