playing in player skates?

Recommended Posts

i haven't played ice hockey goalie in maybe 8 years now. but my high school team is having an alumni game, & well, they want me to play. i have all my equipment, except skates. i do have player skates though

firstly, is it at all wise to do, my first game in forever? its not like we're playing other alumni, we're playing the current team, who went to the NY state championships this year.

second, am i going to crack this cheap plastic/hurt my foot if i take a shot of them?

as much as i'd like to get back into playing, i can't justify spending $200+ on goalie skates right now.

thanks guys.

Yeah you might depending on the shots and does feel kinda weird wearing player skates since you sit a higher up and the boot is funny when you go down. But seen many people do it in beer league.

ive done it for years for my ice team. ive never hurt my foot before or cracked the plastic its just a bit harder with being higher of the ice trying to do pad slides never feel quite right but for one game i think you'll be fine

...not to mention the larger rocker. And the height of the boot. But if it's just for one game and you can't borrow someone's goal skates then you'll most likely be fine.

As has already been stated for a once in a while event, don't worry about having goal skates; however, if this was a league or something where you're playing several games a month then I'd try to find an affordable set of goal skates.

I've had to wear my forward skates in net once because no one called me to tell me our normal goalie couldn't show and I didn't have time to go home to get my goal stuff. I was stuck playing in his gear for the most part minus the gear of mine that could transfer. So I was stuck wearing my forward skates and my forward helmet.

As far as protection goes, I'd be *somewhat* concerned about facing a good HS varsity team in player skates. You might want to look into getting some Pronger-style foot and ankle guards, and heaping on a ton of Mike Fisher-esque Pro-Toe goop on the toe of your boot.

You won't have any problems with the boot - hell, I just built a pair of skates with player boots and RBK cowlings.

As TBL said, the rocker of the skate will probably make you feel off-balance in your stance. I can't eally guess how readily you'll be able to compensate - depends how comfortable you are on player skates.

Good luck!

Honestly, I'd ask around and see if I could borrow someone's skates. But then again, I'm the kind of person that sold almost all my goalie gear but my skates, just in case.

play it again sports in glen cove has a few used pairs of goal skates. that's an option as well.

You could call ahead to see what sizes they have there. Could try in Oceanside too.

Shouldn't be a problem. Lots of guys do it here in the beer league I play in. Of course, not a good idea if you play against skilled players.
