butt ends

Recommended Posts

I've never bought a butt end before but tonight I snapped my shaft above the hosel so I think I'll swing by the LHS for a butt end to try and salvage the shaft. I've noticed they have both composite and woody butt ends. Suggestions?

depending on how far down you broke your shaft is the main point they only make standard composite size but a wood one you can get up to a foot i believe

Iff weight is an issue for you go composite and also if you dont want to cut it down. If not then go with wood to cut down.

they make composite butt ends up to 9 inches. Since it's the blade end, I'd let your LHS make the cut, unless you have a nice table saw or something.

I've got a hacksaw that I'll try and hack around with. I ended up getting a woody butt since the shaft is broke about an inch up from the hosel. Also picked up a NBH 0ne90 P88 blade, I swear I'm going to cry when I'll never be able to get this pattern ever again :{

I had picked up a couple of composite end plugs and already had a few wood end plugs at 3" so they were the same length. I weighed them both and the composite plugs were about 10 grams lighter, so not much difference.

Woody retailed for about $5, how much are comp butts?

anywhere from $10-$25. I forgot to add that these wood plugs were somewhat lightweight not the heavy black ones.

After you make your cut (95% likely that it will be crooked), use sandpaper to even out the walls of the shaft and straighten out the cut.

when I cut a shaft I take hockey tape and mark the line as straight as possible. It definitely helps keep the line straight, but I do sand the end of the shaft just to smooth it out.

Just a quick question. I just picked up a 43 inch cyclone and I'm thinking of putting in an 8" butt end to bring it back to its original length. Do you guys think it should perform fine? Its a 70 flex btw.

depends on which end.

If its cut down normally (top end) then it should be ok. The cyclone has a smaller profile, then flares out to fit a senior blade (similar to a z bubble int).

composite extensions don't help as much as you think. when you are shooting, the extension doesn't move much. it is the blade end that has to accelerate rapidly. therefore a 10 gram difference at the blade side will be much more beneficial than a 10 gram difference at the extension. its similar to rotational mass versus stationary mass on a race car.

I prefer the composites. It's not necessarily the weight difference...it is the balance. A woody plug makes the shaft top heavy. I feel the composites keep the shaft better balanced...again PP issue.

on my wood extensions, i drill a couple holes through the extension lengthwise to lighten it slightly. i think the tps extensions came this way from the factory if i remember right. it probably doesn't make a significant difference but it only takes a few minutes.

I've had the same idea as wetwilly, but I ended up ditching my short shafts and getting a longer one. I do use wood ends to balance out wood blades, but I also have a couple composite ones sitting around.

I've taken to cutting my sticks down, then replacing the butt-ends and cutting them flush with the shaft (I used to just leave them open). Works as a nice counterweight for those of you who might love the feel of wood blades, but don't want to deal with the havoc the bring to the balance of your sticks. It's not much, but it helps.

But doesn't heavier weight towards the top end of the stick move the balance point up? I'd think in the majority of cases, it'd improve the balance of the stick (not by much considering that it's only 10gr)?

Yeah, I said that meaning it was nothing worth the extra cost. They look cool though, haha. I use wood plugs if I use a plug now, I find that it helps with feel... Although not enough to warrant me cutting my sticks to add a wood plug.
