i need a full cage solution to prevent injury

Recommended Posts

it seems the chin cup on my helmet digs into me. i got a shoulder to the face sunday that left me with 9 stitches in my chin from where the chin cup went into my face.

is there something softer i can use? or maybe a brand other than itech?

the point of the full cage is to avoid stitches, i think i may have been less injured without it this time, & last time too when i got 7 stitches a few months ago. heh.

I very much doubt the problem is that the chin cup is too hard or rough. What happens when you get hit is you cage is being driven back into your face, and the chin cup grabs and pulls the skin inside it. It's not so much your chin is being opened by blunt force, but it's being pulled open.

Its really quite common, and once it happens once, you can probably expect it to be an on-going issue.

ya i got stiches 3 times this year too from my black itech mask, i recently got an underarmor chin pad thats made for football helments and got it to fit on my chin strap, it helps a little because its just a softer surface now with the cage hits my chin

Get a mask with a floating chin cup.

I have not heard of a floating chin cup.

Boy do I need to become more a gear junky. What is a floating chin cup and which helmets/masks have them?

How long should someone let the chin cup float without it being to loose?

I like about an inch to a half inch of slack between my chin and the cup, only because I hate having my chin clamped down on the cup. So if the cgae gets slammed into your face, it won't be too bad. Some peeps may prefer a tighter fit, though.
