hockeyherb 1 Report post Posted September 12, 2007 NHL 2K8 review I don't like this guy's review at all but here it is. He failed to focus on anything that makes this game stand apart from NHL 08.First he states he thinks it's the best game this year but then refuses to do a H2H comparison of the games. Of all the things he lauds in the game, MOST of them are in NHL 08 and were in NHL07. Using the sticks to skate and deke? Last year. And you still have to use a bumper and trigger to shoot but somehow he says they're taking the buttons out of the equation. Bumpers, triggers, face buttons - if you gotta push one, what's the difference. Then he spends so little time on what their bread and butter has been, the deeper franchise and online. Nothing he says about the franchise isn't in the NHL product except dealing with an 'agent' which is just a gimmicky way of packaging the same old negotiation model. He didn't mention anything about online in the body of the review.Even the much enhanced player creation model got shortchanged. Rather than say how deep the equipment choices are he complained about the player faces not being customizable. That's a legit gripe since NHL had that issue LAST year, but why not discuss how deep it is?If they ever did a head to head this game would lose bad. No extra leagues like the AHL and Euros, no create a play, much worse graphics and most other things are just equal to NHL now that they added online leagues and fixed the game AI so you can play positional hockey. Fury of One 6 Report post Posted September 12, 2007 I bought the game and I am a little disappointed with it. I was an avid 2K fan when EA was putting out garbage hockey games. Now I feel like the 2K series has become stale and might be leaning more towards the arcade style while EA's going for realism. Either way, I'm picking up 08 today and odds are that 2K8 will be a dust collector.
Bleeding Blue Note 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2007 I had both games(EA and 2K) on pre-order because I liked both versions last year, but after seeing both games being reviewed, I think I'm just going to rent 2K8 and try and switch my $5 down over to Halo 3 or something. 1up.com were particularly brutal on 2K8. hockeyherb 1 Report post Posted September 12, 2007 1up.com were particularly brutal on 2K8.People should definitely read that review before buying so you know what you're getting. I don't imagine JR or this site gets anything directly from the sales of the product so I don't feel too bad steering people away from it if it sucks.1UP.com review of 2K8 - scored a 4.0 (yes out of 10)
JR Boucicaut 3803 Report post Posted September 12, 2007 Why don't people just rent the game and decide for themselves? No, we don't get anything from sales of the game, but I'm proud of what we were able to do for them. They sought us out, not the other way around, and that doesn't happen very often.
5minutesforfighting 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2007 It put me down in the dumps to hear they only have this for 360 and PS3, and not Xbox or PS2. Out of the new machines I chose to get the Wii...bad choice on my part.

But you need to create the Modsquad team like they have the logo in there. I thought it was already created. Awesome job on all the equipment though. Mad props for that. I don't imagine JR or this site gets anything directly from the sales of the product so I don't feel too bad steering people away from it if it sucks.1UP.com review of 2K8 - scored a 4.0 (yes out of 10)I picked up 2k8 for PS2 yesterday. Now my thoughts are largely based on playing only 2k6, and every now and again EA 07 on Xbox 360.First off, the computer is smarter all the way around. The "puck physics" are much more realistic then what im used too, and the skating is alot better. You can actually Hip check, where in 2k6 you couldn't. Also, it seems like you have to score honest goals (read: realistic). Had a couple guys miss one timers because their hips were turned the wrong way when the puck came to them. There is some limited equipment options in the ps2 version, but its cool to see real life stuff in the ps2 game, and you can change around whatever you want on any player I think. The camera constantly moving around during the play takes a little getting used to, but after a bit, its pretty cool. Especially when breaking out of the zone and what not. The graffics have gotten somewhat of an upgrade, but you can still see the relation to the 2k6 game. Also the breakaway moves are pretty cool. All that being said, I never liked the EA games, particularly the way the players skated and shot, Even in 07 for 360. Even though this game is for ps2, I like the way the "game" feels, and would play it over 07.Things I didn't like1)Why the fuck do the sabres have Red gloves, helmets, and miller's goal pads? Really, you missed that one? The new jersey code better fix that.2)Seems like alot of hitting is going on, but hopefully I can mess with the sliders and get it so that my players aren't flopping on the ice all the time (insert Derek Roy joke here)3)Player rosters and ratings are a little out of wack. Hopefully the first update will fix that.4) 4 times I have given up breakaways to the computer, and 3 of 4 times the guy pulled up, circled around the faceoff circle, waited for everyone to get back and then shot. Maybe its because its on allstar and not Hall of Fame mode, but still wtf is that.5)Audio is mostly all the same crap from 2k6, with a few new lines put in. New in game music, and music inbetween plays which is different, but nothing special. So for $20, im pretty happy. I can play a nice franchise mode, and play in online leagues, and I didn't have to drop $500 on a new system that is going to break in 5 months.
