Hockey players get jipped.....

Recommended Posts

Why do NHL players get payed way less that basketball players or baseball players. I dont get it, hockey players are WAY harder working athletes. Yet the highest player in the NHL is about 11 mill and basketball I believe its about 19 (could be wrong) and in baseball the highest paid player I believe is A-rod which is 23 mill? wuts the deal

Where to start???

Other than Basketball less seats.

Small TV contracts.

Overall Small following in the US.

A commish who is a moron.

Crappy marketing.

A late adoptor as a sport by US fans.

A sport that does not translate well onto tv.

I am sure I am missing a few.

I hear the cashiers at Burger King are getting jipped too. Seriously, if a hockey player feels he's not being paid enough, maybe he should try another profession.

And while it doesn't translate well onto TV, playoff hockey is a ton better to watch than basketball. Baseball isn't a whole lot better, and not to mention that the game of baseball is turning into a glorified batting practice.

Hockey players are paid what they are worth (or what their agent can broker) to the highest bidders. I suppose $11 million is what the most profitable player in the league is worth to any one organization.

Also, don't forget about NFL players. They are paid somewhat similar to what NHL players earn. The NFL is likely the second most, if not the most, profitable professional sport. Can't explain that one.

Keep in mind that an NBA team will have roughly 1/4 the roster of an NFL team and 1/2 of an NHL team too. Not to mention it's a dirty money-making whore.

The NFL is by far the most profitable major sport. The national TV deal alone is enough to cover the amount of salary permitted under their salary cap. All of the ticket sales and local revenue go to bonuses and operating expenses. After that it's all profit.

They only have 8 home games.

And mack is right about the number of players on a team.

8 regular season home games at 60k people each. Not to mention the season ticket holders are forced to buy 2 preseason games at full price.

Not enough people care. The general population isn't interested, thus turning out lower money invested into the sport. Chadd had some real good points on why many Americans don't like hockey, here in Canada it seems your either a hockey player, foreign or can't afford to. Hockey is rather expensive to play as well and many people would rather watch something they can play.

I live in Canada, as a child and throughout some of highschool, if you didn't play hockey you were considered a social outcast. God bless Canada.

Eazy, you mean my rant about the fact the average American has the attention span of a squirrel? Paying attention for 3 minutes of continuous action is asking more of them than any other sports, ergo the lack of interest.

Look at the two hottest sports in the US, NFL and NASCAR. Both will show 10 replays of something if you missed it before anything else happens.

That still cant compete with 41 home games at nearly 20k people a pop for basketball. Not to mention preseason or an extended playoffs compared to football.

And the NFL has almost double the salary cap as the NBA.

75% of the NHL's revenue supposedly goes toward players' salaries. Couple that with a product that doesn't translate well to TV and just bad decisions all around and that's why the NHL is struggling.

Elias, you live in Canada, right? Cross the border and see how many people you can start a hockey converstaion with or give a shit about the sport. Fact is, nobody cares and on top of what everyone's said, the media portrays the sport as criminal the three times it's on the news per year.

Each NFL team gets a cut of the national TV deal that's roughly equal to the salary cap. The NBA doesn't get as much from the national TV deal.

Signing bonus doesn't count against the cap, unless a player is cut or traded. Then the bonus is the only thing that counts against a team. It's a bit more complicated but that's the short version.

That's what I was thinking. I think the NFL should get one cap exemption like the NBA teams. I knew they had franchise and some other label they can put on players but I didn't think that made them cap exemptions.

Franchise and trasitional tags just mean that they have to pay certain rates and the player doesn't get to become a free agent as I understand it. I think Franchise means you have to pay them the average salary of the top 5 players at the position.

The signing bonus counts against the cap in the NFL. It's spread evenly over the length of the contract. If the player is cut or traded, then the cap hit is the remaining signing bonus that hasn't been paid.
