No more Steve Yzermans

after seeing all the crazy signing, and how teams of the past becoming good and great, does anyone else feel like i do. im not a huge fan of my favourite team looking different every year.... and there is no point in buying a jersey, because for all i know the name i have on the back will be gone in a year.... i love the new rules and stuff... but its going to take awhile before i enjoy the team jumping

It's not like Yzerman wasn't rumoured to be traded ever. There will be players who stay with an organization for a while. Lowering UFA age means options for more players, but some guys will still spend careers with certain organizations.

That's why you just get an Yzerman jersey and call the collecting quits. I own several team jerseys, but the only ones with names are Yzerman and Lemieux

I don't exactly consider Brodeur and Sakic to be new breed players. They both were stars in the "Lemieux and Yzerman" era.

As far as the idea of not getting a jersey because the player could be gone...if you are a fan of the player, why not get a jersey.

Sure players will move...but if the player was a favorite or has an exceptional year...and you are a fan...why not get the shirt done up.

Exmaple...I have a Blue jays jersey that I got done up with the 30th anniv. patch and the Tom Cheek memorial patch...with Lyle Overbay #35. THE DAY I picked it up is the day they signed Frank Thomas and Overbay gave up his #35. I have a buddy that bugs mre EVERYTIME I wear it...we call it my Lyle Overthomas Jersey.

But, since I have the memorial stuff on it and it is obviously a one year only shirt...it still seems right to me.

I like the fans that continue to wear their jerseys after a player has left the team...espceially if he is a player that made a significant impact while he was on the team.

That is what makes an AHL crowd soo neat. More than 70 % of the jerseys (I'd guess) are players either not on the team anymore otr that have changed numbers....which happnes often in the "A"

Back to your initial point...I think rather than playing an entire career in one city...you'll see guys play somewhere until thay are eligible to move on via UFA...then at the end of their career...go back where they started for one last hurrah with that team.

exactly, i mean nobody will ever be scoffed at for wearing a bourque or thornton jersey to a bruins game even though they both left.

Joe Sakic and Broduer,

And a lot of people forget that Sakic signed an offer sheet with the Rangers in 1997. You don't sign an offer sheet unless you have some intent to leave.

if any of you played pro hockey youd understand its a business. as a fan ya it sucks, but as a player, you do whats right for yourself and your family, and no one can tell you where to go. I had a buddy this year who was guaranteed a spot int he coast and then was released. Players set up security in their life, and do so with big contracts

Ryan Smith wanted to stay an Oiler forever, but they dealt him none the less.

They dealt him because he wouldn't take the money offered, which was fairly high.

Modo and Sundin are two other names that come into mind with this topic, excluding sundins nordique days. I find it pretty cool he stays in toronto after somewhat consistent disappointment.

Iginla is going to be with the Flames for another 7 years which may put him near the end of his career. I know he signed a deal with Dallas the first year of his career, but excluding that he'd be a Flame basically his whole career, up to now plus is 7 years up coming (assuming he stays there)..
