jmiro 55 Report post Posted April 22, 2008 You can be fancier with a ball and goalies tend to have a harder time. Remember a ball doesnt go on end, you can lift it a lot easier, and goalies dont have an easy time with lateral movement.
ddbowdoin 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2008 the balls roll off goalie pads so you can get a lot of cheap goals
Rustpot 1 Report post Posted April 22, 2008 Played IM ball hockey at school this season. We weren't allowed to have the stick above the waist as no one wore any equipment. That ball hurts, especially if it hits your junk. Wear a cup, even if you don't have to.Goalies that play ice will suck unless they've also played roller or ball. They will try to slide and whatnot, which will fail. Regular goalies have good hands though, and they'll play stand-up style so you won't have the top of the net to shoot on. 5-hole and low stick side are the weakspots I've noticed most.Be careful with the ball! I was shooting everything into the rafters with the ball for the first few shots. Your team's play will be dictated by the size of the court and the rules governing play. I played no-contact and the boards were shin-high and padded. It was also low-budget college rec.
oggy_3 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2008 We are playing in an regular size hockey rink, almost NHL size. All the rules are the same as the NHL except High sticking the puck is 2 minutes, and if you make contact to another player by a high stick it is a 4 minutes penalty
supahdon 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2008 The best teams at ball hockey that I've seen were constantly passing the ball. I help run a co-ed league in San Diego where the skill level ranges greatly, so at times the better plays will/can stickhandle through everybody. Unfortunately when we send out teams for tournaments, this style doesn't work against better competition. I'm usually a goalie and I use my ice gear which is frankly overkill. The ball will curve if you shoot it hard enough, so it's harder to control rebounds since you have to deal with a more extreme spin. Plus the ball itself is much lighter than a puck, so I sometimes can't feel it if it's trapped in my equipment. Personal pet peeve is the random roller hockey guys that show up and feel the need to trash talk and automatically assume that no skates means no talent and never consider that most of us play ice as well. starskie 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2008 hah, yeah i've been playing ball hockey for quite some time now (about a couple years). A bunch of friends of mine made a team and we've been together for a while, but like what most people are saying just throw stuff at the net and a lot of cheap goals go in. Crashing the net helps too as a lot of rebounds come off the goalie which usually leads to an open net (because the goalie can't slide over or thinks he still has it in him). I spent over 16 years playing ball hockey/dekhockey in men's leagues before I picked up ice skating. It was a lot of fun, but there were way too many savage meatheads who'd just get a stick and destroy people. That though, reflects more on the league itself....but tends to leave a bitter opinionBut yes, the better teams move the ball often, and move the ball well. I've realized a ball makes it a lot easier for one-touch passes. And like someone mentioned, the goalies have nay lateral movement...Stopping is obviously a hell of a lot easier in sneakers, so most times guys get 2-3 whacks on breakaway chances
