Great Gear at Great Prices

Recommended Posts

I read with interest the long diatribe that finally got locked concerning the high cost of hockey equipment, and how you cannot get good gear at a good price, and that it is keeping kids out of hockey. I find in today's instant gratification world that if you resist the will to buy the latest gear (eg. don't be distracted by bright shiny objects), there are great deals to be had and that one can outfit themselves in great gear for a great price. I will list below current gear I have purchased and the prices paid to demonstrate this. All are senior sized gear, and were not used. Please feel free to add your experiences along these lines.

Skates: CCM Vector 7.5 $130 (Great Skate Moving Sale)

Shinpads: $65 (Hockey.Lax.com)

Pants: Mission Pro $40 (Hockey Giant Closeout)

Elbow: Jofa 9035 $30 (Hockey Giant Closeout)

Shoulder: CCM Pro Tacks $40 (Hockey Giant Closeout)

Helmet: Mission Intake $70 (Hockey.Lax.com)

Gloves: Franklin 9050 $50 (Great Skate Closeout)

Stick: Graf Laser $70 (Cyclone Taylor Closeout)

Cage: Itech Fantom I2 $40 (Icewarehouse)

Bag: Graf $15 (LHS Closeout)

Total Cost: $555

I think, for the quality of the skate, my NBH Supreme 30's at $139, which also included baking and first sharpening, are fantastic value.

I'm a big guy, and they are plenty stiff for my support.

CCM Vector 4 gloves for $50, great value too, although the RBK 5k olympic ones for $59.99 at the giant are good too (I got mine on msh for less, so even better value)

Recently bought pro stock XXX-lites which were half the price of retail XXX-lites. Itech HC95 for $20 at a sportchek which closed down. Easton Air pants for $65.

Been rocking Itech HP1000 pants for 5 years skating 2x a week in beer league and they're still going strong, no major damage. Cost maybe $40 or so.

Also, have some Koho3360 shin guards that I got for maybe $20 and been using them for the same amount of time and they've been going sturdy as well.

For certain pieces of equipment, you don't need to break the bank in order to get adequate protection and years of use. It's just up to you to decide what those pieces of gear will be.

I've found some great deals online lately. $65 for a pair of Vapor XX-Lite pants, $180 for 2 Vapor XXX-lite sticks, $400 for a pair of white RBK 9k's.

Do most NBH pants fit the same? Because idk if they will have the XX's at my lhs so if i go to try on another model for size i dont wanna get a false result.

me too, I want those pants but they're 139 around here.

I haven't tried the pants on but searching the threads around here people are saying they're a much snugger fit. The guy in my store also said that bigger people may have problems moving around in them due to the slimmer fit.
