thefelixculpa 0 Report post Posted August 16, 2007 I am having some concerns over the fit of my newly purchased One70 shinguards.I am 5ft 10.5in tall and I have been using size 13 shin guards for as long as I can remember. I was only playing rec leagues and never purchased new shinguards as I grew. I am now 20 and about to start playing more competitive, DII club level hockey and went out and bought size 15 One70 shin guards.I am not very familiar with how shinpads are correctly supposed to fit, but when I tie my skates and then put these shin guards on, I feel like I have to jam them under the tongue and I feel like they are pushing the tongue of my skate when I skate. Are my shinpads too long? Is it possible to "taylor them", cut a little bit off the bottom without ruining them? Or is this just something I need to get used to?
icedevil82 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2007 They sound a tad long. I'm your height and wear 14'' in the same shinguard, but thats not completely relevant since people of the same height can have shorter or longer legs. But, for a rule of thumb I think if you're just sitting around, put a skate on...then put your shinguard on so its centered on your kneecap. The shinguard should come to about the top of your skate boot and rest there comfortably.
Spreedizzle 1 Report post Posted August 17, 2007 Put your skates on and sit down on a couch/chair and measure from the center of your knee cap to the crease where the tongue of the skates meets the laces. This should be approximately the length of your shin guards.
blues_91 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2007 Do you tuck your tongues in or leave them out? Tucking them in allows you to use longer shin pads.
Spreedizzle 1 Report post Posted August 17, 2007 I do not tuck mine inside of my shin guards. 5'10" 190lbs, 14" Mission Fuel 110's. They fit me and join about 1/2 short of the ankle cut in my Vector 8.0's. Pretty much perfect synergy between the two.
Konig von Kuhlem 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2007 Try wearing the shin pads over the tongue of the skate. You'll be able to use a longer pad. I've been wearing mine like that for years with shin pads that would otherwise be too long.
thefelixculpa 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2007 I did what you guys said and I am pretty sure that they are too big.I can't return them now though, already removed tags and skated in em for a little. Can I cut them down at all without ruining them? Cut some of the softer stuff down and sew it then cut some of the hard plastic?Or better yet, is anybody interested in buying a brand new pair of 15'' One70 shin pads? haha
Spreedizzle 1 Report post Posted August 17, 2007 Post them on either e bay, or in the sellers section here. Someone will pick them up for a decent price.

TBLfan 25 Report post Posted August 17, 2007 would be worth a shot. I had to because my shins wouldn't fit inside the boot comfortably. I actually liked it!
W.Heinle 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2007 I'm 5ft10 and wear 15" shinpads. I play D and wear them over the tongue though. I like my shinpads coming down a bit lower for extra protection if I block a shot.

I wear 30in but they usually cover a good bit of my feet with shoes off. Just trying to get an idea of your leg length and if I should be wearing 14s
strosedefence34 178 Report post Posted August 20, 2007 I am your height and I play college ice hockey as well and I use size 13 I was wearing size 14, but they kept getting pushed out of position and now that I switched to a smaller size I have more mobility. They come up to about the top of the toung of my skate. Shin pads are pp IMO. Just go with what feels right. If you are measuring out to a 14, but don't want to spend the money see if you can find someone who has a pair of 14's see if you can borrow them for a practice or a drop in try them out and if they still feel weird go with a 13. I also wear a 32L in my pants and they cover a good bit of my feet with shoes off, but im no help I just like my pants longer then they should be.

ramensandwich 1 Report post Posted August 21, 2007 i'm 5'8 145, 30 inch leg, and i wear 15 inch shins. odd i know. im telling you, you have to try putting your tongues inside. it is 10 times more comfortable and you can tie your skates tighter and get better ankle support. IMO having the tongues inside made me able to skate a lot better.but yes, cutting them is no problem. back before i discovered the joys of keeping my tongues tucked in, i cut down several pairs. i recommend doing it with a dremel. cut across the plastic part, then take a knife or something and rip the stitches holding the cut part on, and then take it right off. then take some scissors and snip the bottom padding to your preferred length and you'll be good to go.
