NBA: Greg Oden may miss the entire season

Recommended Posts

Durant will be better anyway, even if Oden was healthy.

It's a pretty damning surgery though.

Remember how good Penny Hardaway was? Yeah, then he had microfracture surgery. Remember when Jason Kidd could go end to end quicker than anyone on the court? Then he had microfracture surgery.

Remember when STAT had microfracture surgery and came back a better player?

Almost a year later. He also already had a knowledge of the NBA at that point. Oden will be learning the NBA next year on a leg he might not be sure of.

Even if he's the same age as my grandfather, Oden's a better fit for Portland. That said, I'm always of the school of thought that takes the best player available and he wasn't it.

I took STAT for an example because he is relatively close to the frame/age of Oden when injured. Kidd and Penny were both 30+ when the surgery had to be performed.

The surgery is often seen as a career killer, but I believe Oden will be able to work through it much like STAT did. Not to mention his is a smaller scale than Amares operation was and he is in peak shape now w/ years ahead of himself to build on compared to Penny and Kidd.

Theres no doubt that Amare lost some of the hop in his step for some monster flushes, but his overall game is much more polished. He doesnt need to take it to the rack every play, and can rely on the 18footer.

I can definitely see Oden having a career where he's always fighting random injuries and showing flashes of greatness when he's healthy, but never really being dominant because he's always banged up. Much like his college career, if you can call it that.

Incorrect. If the Blazers weren't morons they would have drafted Durant and wouldn't have had to give away the best player they had in Zach Randolph. Then they could have had Aldrige at centre with Randolph and Durant at forward and Roy and Jack in the backcourt? How do you defend that team?

True, it's still a really good looking starting 5 they have now (well before Oden was hurt) and historically speaking franchise centers win championships, but I think Durant is unlike any player the NBA has ever seen on the offensive end of the floor. He could end up being mentioned as one of the 5 or 6 best players in the history of the game, and I don't think Oden has that kind of ceiling.

The main reason I didn't like the Oden pick was because it was just another example of a franchise taking the 'safe' way out...you pick Oden beacuse everybody says you don't pass up potential franchise centers, that way if he turns out to bust, oh well you made the consensus pick so nobody can really blame you if it turns out to be the wrong decision.

Not incorrect. Oden's going to become more of a 'classic' center than Durant could ever be. Durant's better, more explosive, but for what Portland has I think Oden would just solidify them down the middle. I think if they have Durant they get into the "wait, we only use one ball" problem.

Yeah, they wanted to build in the more classic style. And they probably feel Aldridge will be a poor man's Durant.

It's probably going to be a solid rotation of Przybilla, Frye, Aldridge, LaFrentz, and McRoberts in the 4/5. They'll probably look for a PG in the draft this year. If they suck they can end up with Rose, Collison, or Bayless. I don't see them going for Mayo 'cause it'd look like a return to the Jailblazers days.

I'm not sure how old your grandfather is but if he's a grandfather, I'm guessing he's not 20. That being said, Oden looks like he's probably as old as your grandfather. Which makes me wonder if his body is going to be able to withstand the rigors of the NBA. Kind of like, he's got an old man's body with a young man's age.

Z-Bo has to be one of the the worst 20-10 players i've ever seen.

Does he REALLY look like there is any way he could possibly be a 19-year-old kid to you? I tried to believe it, but I just can't.
