Vapor XXXX Ankle problem

Recommended Posts

I have had my Vapor XXXX skates for about a month and a half now. My last pair of skates were Vapor XXX's.

I was on them about once a week up until the past 2 weeks where I was on every night. My inside ankles on both feet are absolutely killing me, can't even walk in them without being in great pain. I have been using silicone pads just to decrease the pain to get through practices and games.

When I heat molded them I had the original insoles in them, but a week after I started using superfeet insoles. I used the superfeet in my XXX's as well. Could this be the problem? Should I get them re-molded using the superfeet?

Superfeet do change the way your foot sit in the skate. Between the arch lift and the heel cup, you may be up a few millimeters or if you pronated your inner ankle will certainly be sitting higher from the correction in posture.

Rebaking would be the first thing you should try. Make sure you don't bake the insole. Heat them up, put the soles in and go.

It might come down to the skates being more stiff than your XXX pair causing discomfort, or even a different fit issue altogether.

I would assume that the superfeet innersole changed where your foot was located in relation to the original mold done by the baking. Maybe another bake would help, but use the superfeet. Good luck though, i know what it's like skating in pain!

I had the same problem with my XX's. I ended up getting them punched out in the area that was giving me trouble and that took care of the problem. Here are a couple of threads that I found when I was dealing with the problem.

I hope that helps out.

I had the same problem with the new vapor line, I was on the ice every night for the past week and half for training camp. After about 3-4 nights I noticed alot of pain on top of my ankles. All that I did was tie them a bit tighter in the foot area and loosen them a little around the ankles to allow a bit more movability. Not sure if they would work for you aslo, but maybe try it first before paying out the money to re-bake if it's not needed.

Thanx for the suggestions, I think I am gonna rebake them. I would try loosen them but i don't like having that loose of ankles being a defenceman.

When I tie them I have been leaving out the top eyelit because they are so stiff compared to the XXX's.

You might want to consider rebaking them with the superfeet in them.

Do not put the Superfeet in the oven. The plastic used in the arch support will warp like hell. Take the insoles out before baking.

I had the exact same problem with my XXXX's when I got them. Baked them 3 times, all 3 with the superfeet in them (did not warp the plastic at all). After the baking didnt help, i had my lhs punch out the ankle area, and now they fit better than ever. super comfortable. in my skates they also punched out the heel area a little so my foot sat deeper in the skate.

I found the same problem but to a lesser extent with my Vapor XVI's. I wore them to public skating a few times with the standard footbeds and they where great. Good balance and great manoeverablilty. The night before I went to use them for hockey I figured I'd stick in a nice pair of Shock Doctor insoles and take out the standard insoles. To my surprise when I played hockey the next day they just didn't feel right as soon as I got on the ice for the warm up skate. I fell and stumbled all over the ice the whole game and when I tried to skate backwards I just couldn't get the right balance to cross over correctly. I'm sure it was the insoles because I stuck the standard ones back in for the next game and I was fine again. I think the insoles lifted my heels up a bit and just that slight change in foot stance made a world of difference especially sitting back more on my heels with the Nike/Bauer skate. I know if I had left the Shock Doctors in permanently I would probably adjust eventually but I like the stance with the original insoles. It's just amazing how something so subtle can change your performance on the ice or start a problem with chaffing on your ankles.

Well I went to my LHS and got the skates re-heated using the superfeet, ankles are still tender so it is hard to tell how much it worked, I had them punch out both ankles just to make sure, felt alot better and will only really tell when my ankles heal up.

If things don't go well, then I guess there will be a used pair of vapor xxxx's hitting the market.

Thanx for the input guys.

they will get better, just have them keep punching different areas a little at a time. my lhs punched mine about 4 times before they got the exact spot that was bothering my ankle. you just really have to pay attention to exactly where there is pressure on your ankle, and just have them punch that small section out a bit. try it again for the next skate, and see if its better. if not, make a mental note of what part is bothering you and then another trip back to the lhs. now that mine fit good, i love the skates. no need to sell them, just be patient and your lhs will get them to fit you right
