Blade Recommendation

Recommended Posts

So I am thinking of getting some custom tapered wood blades made for this upcoming season. Anyone have any recommendations on which company i should go through?

How's the durability of the Christian woodies? I recently switched back to wood blades (950s) and have gone through three in less than two weeks (I'm working on numbers four, five and six). Obviously, coming from composite (even CNT Z-Carbons), a drop in durability is to be expected.

At this point, I'm just wondering if I'll be able to find a good wood blade that is going to last me at least a little while longer before going completely soft.

Or if there is some way I can lengthen the life of the blade (I was thinking about putting tape along the bottoms and tops of the blades, then coating it with some sort of hard epoxy - hoping maybe this will cut-down on the torquing)? Anybody ever try something like this?

If it comes down to it, I suppose I'll have to just clean-out my shops selection of RH Bouchards and take them with me where ever I go.

Removing the tape after every on-ice session will dramatically increase wood blade life. Using something like pro-toe as a base coat under the tape may also help lengthen the life of a blade.

The custom Christians that I used got a little soft but didn't break or chip at all. I only took the tape off after every session, I didn't do anything else.

Believe me - my sticks get the baby treatment; I routinely switch sticks and the tape always comes off the sticks even before my skates come off my feet. It's not a question of the way I care for my equipment.

The blades aren't breaking; but the laminate cracks across the blade faces (forehand and backhand) and the blade loses all rigidity soon thereafter.

I've liked everything about the 3 batches of Christian custom wood blades I've used, with the exception of their durability. They have been the worst wood blade I've ever used when it comes to fiberglass delaminating and wood softening/splintering. This has been the case for me with both the old and new fibergalss wraps from Christian.

There are obviously some good points to Christian customs, or I wouldn't have gone back to them after the first batch.

FYI...we (Christian) just released a new resin that we are applying to all of our blades. This new resin makes these blades unquestionably the most durable wood product we've produced in 40+ years. We are using this on all of our blades, sticks, and goal sticks. It does add a little weight, but it is well worth it.

When does it come and out what curves are you offering? Standard or tapered?

Nice... I just ordered mine a week ago. I've heard mostly positive so I am looking forward to being reunited with the Shanny curve.

Good to know. Do you need to call out a specific wrap or resin when ordering, or is just a wholesale change that replaces the prior material.

I'll definitely be giving them a shot. If I were to order a few of the DiamondLite blades from your site, they would have this new resin, correct?

I'm going to guess that they'll be available with all the options featured on their site.

All custom blades from now on (unless requested otherwise) will have this new resin. As for our stocked patterns, some have it and some don't. The best thing to do is give us a call and we can make sure that one is shipped with the new resin. We do have some in stock right now.
