Nike Bauer 9500

Recommended Posts

So obviously NBH will have their four 'main' helmets next year (4500, 5500, 8500, 9500), but I wonder at what point they will phase some of them out?

Good question.

...and I answered it.

But I guess I have to go into more detail -

NBH 9500 $149.99

RBK 8K $139.99

Easton Stealth S17 $129.99

Cascade $119.99

NBH 8500 $109.99

Mission Intake $99.99

CCM Vector $89.99

NBH 5500 $79.99

NBH 4500 $64.99

Easton Stealth S9 VN $64.99

Make sense?

Wow, TBLfan, I completely knew you were going to come in and say that. I was about to post "Here comes TBLfan."

Haha, good call. You guys are getting to know me too well!

And just when I bit the bullet and bought an EPP helmet(8K). The sad truth is that I'm considering buying a 4500 or 892 to do a foam swap.

Wow, someone's discovered NBHBiz.

They even posted or mentioned it on a video.

What is nbhbiz? a website for retailers?

NikeBauerBiz is a real-time inventory and order site for retailers.

You must have a NBH account to access it.

Easton has the same thing, same company actually.

There is a section of it that has high-resolution pictures of product. The 2008 stuff is on there already.

dammit. Did you say Stealth VN? Crap... Looks like I might be buying TWO new helmets. Fack!

Hope this doesn't go to OT, but has there been any real studies on the protective benefits of VN versus EPP in helmets? I kind of stay clear of EPP cause it seems less protective, but I'm not sure.

It's slightly more protective in a single hard hit, but once it's fractured it's actually dangerous to wear as it no longer offers sufficient protection. VN absorbs sweat so you don't have sweat dripping in your eyes, it's more comfortable and it will last through numerous hits until it gets hard. But we've talked about this subject to death.

I've played pickup with an EPP helmet and I hated it, I'm going to give the 8K a go as-is before I do anything and see if I can grow to like it.

I posed this question directly to the designers at NBH during the Summit Meeting . There is a world of difference between the EPP foam used in hockey helmets and the EPP foam used in cycling helmets. It is not the same foam!! A cycling helmet is a crash helmet. The cycling helmet is designed and made with an EPP foam(it is not even EPP exactly) that is designed for a single impact crash. That is why the cycling helmet must be discarded after one crash!! There is no way any hockey manufacturer would put into the marketplace or even pass certification standard testing a single impact foam. The new foam being used in the 9500 is called FXPP. It is a multi-impact foam. There is increased bead count per volume. This is optimizing the foam density of FXPP. There is a 20% improved impact result with FXPP over the EPP now being used in hockey helmets. When I posed the question of "one and done" for EPP hockey helmets, the designers were more than surprised. Once they explained the single crash properties of cycling helmets vs. multi-impact foams being used in hockey helmets, it was all too simple. Again, there is no way any helmet manufacturer would run the risk of liability using a single impact foam system in a hockey helmet.

While it's not the same as a cycling helmet it shares similar properties and is a LOT more likely to fracture that a VN. Admittenly it would take a very hard blow and/or a blow in the proper spot at the right amount of pressure but once it's fractured it's compromised. VN doesn't have that issue, but the shell of the helmet can be compromised by a heavy hit.

That still doesn't change the way I feel about VN. For me, the benefits of VN outweigh any small plus EPP gives you.

I saw the bucket about a week ago...looks pretty sharp, I like it. The back adjustment is awesome and you can really feel it lock to your head nice and firmly. I see all the custom colors being a big hit for team orders also. I just cant decide what is more comfortable and/or better looking....8k or this.

Interesting. Bike helmets are made out of EPS. Once you crash, it compresses and it's done. EPP is still good after a few hard hits. That, I knew for a few months.

Alfredsson has been a bit of a helmet whore since he got off the 690 train - he had an 8500, a 4500, now a 9500, and I think I saw him in an 8k once, but I might just be crazy/making that up. I'm somewhat glad he got a haircut and made the helmet change though, because I have long hair and wear a 690, so I don't want to look like I have a Perron-esque man-crush on him.

I think if I went and searched for that, then I really would have a man-crush on him. I know he tried several different ones when he was coming off the 690; which I don't understand, because if there wasn't a new one he liked better, why not just stick with the 690?

Oh and also, 9500 is an aesthetic disappointment. Looks exactly the same as the 5500 (which doesn't look that great to start with).
