What the Heck

Recommended Posts

Sorry for the rant:

In Dallas for the weekend so I figured I'd hit up some good hockey shops to pick up some skates. Every place I went, noone knew what I was looking for, nor did they have my size in anything, they barely even knew the skate existed.

I went to:

Players Bench - total ass clowns working there

Stars Center Plano - had 4 skates on the wall, didn't know what the skate was

Stars Center Frisco - didn't have the skate nor my size in any mission

Play it again sports <---passed by, figured why not, didn't have anything

I called Perani's a.k.a. hockeyworld.com because they have a store about 30 miles away, but they didn't carry them either. All I want is some 11.5D Mission Fuel 90AG's because noone has the S400s or S500s in stock. Sad thing is, the little bitty hockey pro shop at the rink in College Station is the only shop so far that carries this model, but they don't have my size either. If I order from there its $215 out the door, baked, sharpened, etc.

Where the heck do you Texas Guys buy your skates?

Want to try them on to make sure they fit right, tried on some 12Ds that fit ok still had some room. But from what I've heard, Missions get about 1/4 larger when baked, etc, and I'd rather them tighter. So its a toss up between 11.5, and 12.

I know, I sound like a pain in the ass

I've found Perani's to have the widest selection. Unfortunately they don't carry Mission ice skates. They usually have good deals on closeout skates so they might be worth a try if your willing to try other brands. Their customer service can be hit or miss. Your other option would be The Hockey Shop in Lewisville, they have good customer service and I think they carry Mission skates.

Now I know why you are called big ben. 11.5 D is not a size I stock in my shop. I am not surprised that no one in Texas does either. Add in the fact that you're looking for Mission skates(not a #1 brand in most LHS) and this search was sunk before you started. Try calling the shops you're headed to before walking in and finding out no sizes for big ben.

BTW,I'm all for the 12th Man. Go Aggies!!

I've never had a problem finding Mission skates in my size...There usually are a couple models of Mission or Grafs at any shop besides the usual Bauer/CCM or Eastons.

Location, Location, Location! You're in Minnesota so there's a little more of a market for them there than most places.

I just would expect someone to know what they are talking about.

That gets harder and harder to find every day in the hockey world.

Its unfortunate....cause I feel like I don't know anything, bugging everyone on here with questions, but those guys have no business working in a hockey store. I'd be better at it, lol

Knowing what some of the guys know here doesn't happen overnight. Most of those kids in shops are in their late teens at best so you can't expect them to know everything. It's no secret that there's a not a ton of money to be made in this business so the kids are part time until the go to school and then they move on. It takes a special person who has a love for the game and likes to help people to stay in the business long enough to become knowledgable. I've been in the business now for 8.5 years and there is still stuff to be learned.

It seems to be a never ending learning experience when it comes to hockey equipment and technology. It changes all the time and when you throw humans into the equation, you'll get many different perspectives and opinions of equipment and so on

I have gotten my last two pairs of skates online. I did the same thing you did and went to a whole bunch of different stores while visiting a hockey city but had no luck. I have a had tons of luck with hockeygiant.com and it just so happens they have a store not far from me as well. Good luck finding some skates man.

No doubt, take advantage of the free shipping online for a case like this. You'll spend less money on return shipping than you'll spend driving from place to place.

It's kind of hard to expect employees of a place that doesn't carry the skate you're looking for to know about the product. Especially when you're talking minimum wage high school kids.

Well the skates I'm gonna get the, mission fuel 90ags most likely, shipped are about $200, my "LHS" has them for $215 sharpened, baked, 1 skate time, etc. so I'll probably have them just order them.

I called first to the one in Euless and he said they didn't have the 90s, 100s, or 120s. Could have been some lazy ass who didn't wanna use the comp.
