Do you go to college hockey games?

Recommended Posts

Do I go to college games? Sure do! When the bruins jacked up the ticket prices a few years ago, and when they started to stink, I realized that I could drive 10 minutes to the local D1 college and watch teams like BC, BU, Northeastern, UNH, etc play better hockey at 1/20th the cost, and 1/2 the time expended! Been going ever since! Season tix are about the same cost as one night out at the garden!

No colleges noted for their hockey in this area. There was a tourney with georgetown, duke etc here, but I didn't make it.

DC is a basketball school town.

Although I'm going to be going to the frozen four when it gets to DC in 2009

I've been to homes games for the Sioux, Gophers, Harvard Crimson and BC Eagles. Have also been to several NHL games: Wild, Avs, Bruins, including some playoff games--but, unforunately, never a Stanley Cup series game--and also saw an All Star game. I'd have to say the Gophers and Sioux games were the generally the most fun and best hockey I have ever seen (setting aside 2 remarkable games, including one of Gretzky's last games where he faced Selanne and Kariya and one of Forsberg in his prime where he had either the goal or assist for every Avs point, including scoring the game winner with about 16 seconds left in OT) .

Nearly all of the Gophers end up drafted and they play on an Olympic sheet, so that might explain why they are so much fun to watch. The Gophs and Sioux also attract knowledgeable crowds. The tickets are so hard to get that you only get die-hards (and expense account types) to the arena.

I can do without obnoxious fans, but the Gophers fans in particular are wonderful. All the traditions at Mariucci make the game very interactive. The fans really are made a part of the team, and the team really is of the community. Every skater this year is a Minnesotan, again. The Gophs salute of the fans at the end of the game as a tremendous way to wrap it all up. I see the Rangers have begun to do that now, too.

The Best chant ever is at Harvard after short handed goals: "Thalidomide, thalidomide: short handed goal!" Leave it to Ivy Leaguers to come up with brilliant, but mean, humor like that.

The NCAA teams usually beat-up on the Canadian schools pretty good.

It depends where your coming from. Ontario universities tend to be weaker, while the West usually has the 3 solid teams. The AUS is arguably the stronger league. UNB, defending national champs, have most players coming from major junior careers, with very few players actually coming up from jr. a. They lost 5-3 to Univ. of Mass.-Lowell the other day, it was an exhibtion game, and I don't know if Mass-Lowell is a good school or not, but that is definitly not a blow out. There are good university hockey teams in Canada that can skate with the NCAAer's.

It is like comparing apples and oranges. A top Canadian player has 2 choices, play in the CHL (QMJHL, WHL, OHL) as a "pro", or play over the border in a US NCAA D1 school. By the time the player agest out if he took the chl route, if he is very good he is on his way to the show (AHL or NHL). Only if he does not go to the show, does he then fall back on the Canadian university hockey system.

So it would be a little unlikely that a top D1 NCAA college can not beat a Canadian university, considering that the best Canadian and US players are either in the US university or CHL "pro" teams.

Some of these "best players" that take the CHL route, can light the CHL up but they know they're not goin' past echl or AHL. Theres a handful of draft picks as well who play. The CIS house good names, that just dont' want to waste there life in the ECHL or AHL.

I just read that the University of New Brunswick beat UNH 4-3 last week. I believe UNH is ranked 5th in the US if not top 10. THat has to give some credibitility to the CIS...

just got back from my first Iowa hockey game... I was surprised how hard they played, some big hits and exciting plays, I'm hooked!

The AHL Iowa Stars? The University of Iowa has a club team, it isnt NCAA or remotely close to being NCAA sanctioned, but still fun to watch I'm sure.

university of iowa club team. MACHA Div. 2, lost to Minnesota last night, won 5-3 today. haven't seen a Stars game, but I think I'm gonna check out a few of the RoughRiders games (USHL Junors). I've heard the RoughRiders games are pretty fun to watch, so I'll see if it lives up to expectations.

I like watching college kids play because they play with such heart. Being at that school is most likely fulfilling any kids dream because most of us aren't going to the big show. I love watching the bone crushing hits and their feet moving a million miles an hour for an open puck. D1 and D3 games get good especially if its a good rivalry. I like watching major junior too but nothing compares to a good college game especially with the atmostphere.

damn i miss college hockey... go BU !

Hows it feel to be beat my boys, RMU?

The Best chant ever is at Harvard after short handed goals: "Thalidomide, thalidomide: short handed goal!" Leave it to Ivy Leaguers to come up with brilliant, but mean, humor like that.

Okay, I had to look it up, but that's really funny

College Hockey really seems to lose something on TV, much more than NHL games. Anyone else notice this?

Yes. I'm not really into watching college hockey on TV, but I try to never miss home games of the club here. It's a *lot* more exciting.

This may seem stupid but what does it mean?

I would go to games when I was at Miami. Goggin would hold 2000 max, with three sides of the glass open to standing room crowds. Those were a lot more fun than the football games, even with Roethlisberger.

I haven't been to the new arena they built on top of the old roller hockey court.

I'll catch the occasional game on ESPN U now. Kind of tough to go to college hockey games in Texas.

Thalidomide is a drug from the '50s that caused major birth defects in kids, specifically stunted arms.

I used to go to University of Alaska-Fairbanks games and Alaska Gold Kings games in the early 90's when I was in the Air Force. Not much else to do in Fairbanks in the winter.

I work at Holy Cross College and try to go to as many games as I can.

I usually go to the tournament regionals in Worcester.

Went to the Beanpot one year and it was incredible.
