CCM 692 Helmet

Recommended Posts

OK, I'm going to probably come off as whiny and not-so-tough, but I'm willing to take that chance.

Recently pulled my Itech helmet out of my bag at the beginning of the season only to notice that the plastic had cracked, making it unsafe to wear. Since pick-up started 30 minutes after this revelation, I rushed to my LHS and tried, to no avail, to fit my cage on what they had in stock. Ended up in desperation buying a 692 combo.

In the store, this helmet felt great on me, but the last three times I've worn it it has been giving me a headache. It kind of pinches my head right above the temples. Anyone else had this experience with this helmet? Does it go away, i.e. does the helmet break in? I'm pretty sure I have the right size (by all accounts I should be wearing a M, my head measures 22.75"), at any rate the next size up felt super loose.

For what it's worth, my last helmet was an Itech HC95 size M and I never had this problem with it.

adjust the sizing... Maybe you need to cut your hair, maybe your cage or half shield(if you have either) might be effecting your fit.

Just got a hair cut :), I think the adjustable sizing on these is only front to back and this is pinching on the sides. Unless it's adjustable in that direction as well? Cage would be affecting the front to back fit as well, do you agree?

ccm helmets are brutal, ive tried them on hundreds of kids and maybe 1 out of 100 will say it feels okay. vector is a decent helmet but the 692/492 are really uncomfortable, i cant beleive so many nhl guys use them. then again the foam is way thinner for the nhl version of these helmets, nike bauer 4500 all the way!!!!!!!!!!!

You're right BUT adjusting the length(especially if you're on the lowest setting) can let the foam relax a bit. Doesn't make much sense to me since the padding isn't attached but when I dont cut my hair for a while and it gets tight I loosen it up and it's good. The cage could be pinching the sides of the helmet.

My son had the same problem with most vn helmets (I won't let him wear an eep helmet),especially that one, but he found the 852/892 to be pain free. However, I can wear his 692 with no problem.

Must be a personal fit thing; you just gotta find the model that fits your particular degree of block-headedness. :)

Edit: On second thought the Nike/Bauer helmets were even worse, he complained about those as soon as he put them on.

CCM and me never got along with helmets. I was given one when I played select and fuck did I ever hate it. I would have to take it off regularly because it was putting pressure on the sides of my head. YOUR NOT ALONE !

I've always had the same temple-squeezing problem with my old CCMs and I think it's due to the VN. I've been using EPP helmets since and they're a lot more comfortable

I have this theory that perhaps after a game when you dump your helmet into your hockey bag (and toss it into the trunk of a car and then have another teammate or two pile their bags on top), it might deform the shape of your helmet slightly. Since EPP is more rigid, it would make the helmet more resilient to this squishing.

Just a theory. I'd like to hear other people's thoughts on this.

You can try shaving down some of the foam in the pinching areas. Just take a knife and cut out squares of foam until the pain goes away. It won't compromise safety (although I'm sure warranty will go out the window) and could be the solution. I've usually had to do some surgery to my buckets to make them feel just right.

Whats the difference between EEP, and VN ?

VN (vinyl nitrile) is the spongy foam padding found in older helmets and low-to-middle-end contemporary helmets.

EPP (expanded polypropylene) is the stiff styrofoam-looking material in higher-end helmets. You might recognize it as the same material bicycle helmets are made of.

Good to see I'm not the only one irritated by this. I took TBLfan's advice and lengthened the helmet as far as it could go. Pressure is less initially, but I'll see tomorrow night if, after wearing it for awhile, I still get a headache. If so, I might take Dr. Hook's advice and shave it.

Edit: Clarity...first try was nonsensical.

it makes no sense to me, doesn't look like it should work but it does. Of course that is dependant on whether the helmet fits you in the first place.

In that case, I'm looking to sell off a collectible antique OPS made from a substance called "trees". It's obsolete, but it's what some of the legendary greats from yesteryear like Brett Hull used. The stuff is so old that rumor has it Jeremy Roenick once played with them.

I've got a pro stock CCM lid with the vinyl nitrile foam padding and it is defenitively not "way thinner" than the retail CCM:s. Different helmets fits different on different peoples heads. Go with what fits your head. Does it really matter to you what the NHLers use?

It all depends on head size. My HT2 is almost the same thing, and it fit me the best of my options when I bought it. When safety starting being a concern, I started shopping for a new lid and found some that fit perfectly, even better than that.

Always found CCM helmets pinched me around the temple area when I wore a cage. Before I put the cage on they where fine. I still preferr the Bauer 4000, 5000 or 8000 over CCM. Much more comfortable on my head. Also the Mission Intake I find very comfortable as well.

OK, well, I lengthened the bucket, as TBLfan suggested (thanks!), and no headache. Also, I scored my first goal of the season, but I don't think that's related :) Helmet still pinches a bit but it's way more comfortable.
