JR Boucicaut

Bad sharpenings

Recommended Posts

Belfour and the Leafs guy both do the skates, Eddie has said so himself. Anyway, interesting bit in the THN skate buyers guide about Coffey. He spent most of his career at 1" and was even at 2" at one point. makes me laugh every time someone asks for 3/8 let alone 1/4.

True, but keep in mind Coffey could get his skates sharpened every period if he wanted to. I totally agree about the people who get deep hollows, but the shallower one will get duller quicker.

No disagreement from me about frequency or how long a sharpening lasts . I will say the steel on my Pitch's holds an edge a lot longer than any other skate I've used. I really like the steel.

i mean what you sharpen most of the kid's that come in's skates at..I see. After skating on 3/4s, i can barely stop with 3/8s anymore.

Well you're a pretty big guy so i would put you at a 10 or 11 profile. As for your blade hollow i would put you at 1/2. I know im not JR but i hope this helps.

So let me get this straight (im no sharpener)- the deeper the grove (1/4 etc.), the "sharper" the skate feels- it grips the ice better right? But it is also harder to glide, making the overall skate easy to turn but hard to stride? and the shallower (1" etc) makes it feel less "sharp"- it grips the ice less, making it harder to turn and better to stride, right? so does that mean that if u have good knee bend it is advantageous to have a shallower groove? and also a shallower groove lasts less long too right? so if i and 5' 7, 165, and i use a 1/2 inch radius is that good for me? im a D if that makes a difference and i am a dece-good skater. also, that tool JR is using makes sure that the blade has been sharpened "levely"- making sure that the blade is even on the inside and outside edge- right? so does this mean that if my left outside edge has been feeling EXTREMELY dull lately that maybe the sharpener dude isnt sharpeneing them evenly? last, what is the profile of the blade? is that like the shape of the blade itself (ie where the toe of the blade starts curving up and where the heel does too) and how can i tell if my profile is good for me or not? soory to ask so many questions but i just would like to be more knowledgable on the subject (skate sharpening has always been a huge factor for me- i only know of 2 places in my state where i like to get my skates sharpened). Thanks.

if theres only two places in your whole state, i really hope you live in rhode island.

Hell, there's one in Florida...

Nizzle - you've pretty much got it down. Factor in your weight, skating style and ice conditions (the softer the ice, the shallower you want to go)

I can tell by pain. If I feel a lot of strain in my back and knees I know I need to go shallower.

To me it's not a matter of the blades feeling dull with a shallow hollow, it's more like the skates aren't stuck in the ice. With a deep hollow, you really have to lift the skates up to get them out of the grooves. With a shallow hollow it feels like so much less effort.

I agree, a shallow hollow is much easier to skate on. Funny thing is, most of the out of state shops say "Are you a goalie or what?" or something like that when I tell them I want my skates at 3/4.
