Lie help

I don't think this has been answered/mentioned before, but is there a length/lie ratio for your stick? That may be confusing, but basically I'm using a Drury, lie of 5.5, but to compensate for the highish lie, I had to add a couple inches to my stick. I'd rather use my stick at the regular length, and want to get custom Drury blades, but don't know what lie to get them at so I don't have to add this extension. Does anyone know a general standard, or if there even is one?

I use a 6 lie and my sticks are ~63" heel to top. The one 4 lie blade I have had a 52" shaft and somewhere between 6 an 8" of extension behind it, along with the ~6" hosel that beast was somewhere around 65" but sat about 5" taller on the wall. I got rid of that thing quick.

I want to get my hands on a Holmstrom pro stock. From what the announcers were saying he's a 6 ft bastard with a 50" stick.

its weird, i use a much shorter stick than when i was in bantam and first year varsity. i used to be around 6' and used a 62" stick, now im 6'2" and i had to cut 3 inches off the mission toxic i have to get the blade to wear evenly.

Most people use a shorter stick to compensate for a higher lie.

I know, it's weird. When using the Drury, I found it best to have the blade situated with the first third of the blade (the heel) on the ice. It's the easiest way to have the puck roll heel to toe. When I use the curve at the length I'd like, I find that too much of the toe portion of the blade is on the ice, and I don't get that smooth heel-toe motion, just an abbreviation of it, which usually sends the puck fluttering since there isn't enough space for the puck to roll/spin off of.

That's an issue with the radius on the bottom of the blade more than anything else. You're compensating for that more than the fact that it's a higher lie. In fact, using it that way it's probably more like a 4.5 lie on the back half of the blade. Do your wrist shots tend to stand up on edge?

What do you mean, and in which case; toe or heel? Everything is fine when using the stick slightly longer than normal, since when the blade is closed over the puck, the blade is laying flat on the ice, with the puck sitting in the 'pocket' where the heel curve begins. Everything comes off as a perfect saucer, but when I use the curve at normal length, the blade doesn't close over the puck as perfectly, unless I'm holding the puck farther from my body. I don't know if this is all making sense or not. I'd rather just find out a better lie so I can use the stick at chin height rather than 2 or so inches longer, than re-learn the mechanics of shooting all over again.

When you use the Drury at normal length, where is the wear? If it is near the middle, just get a 5.5 with a flat radius. If it is near the toe, get a 6 with a flat radius. If it is near the heel, get a 5 with a flat radius.

It's generally towards the last third of the blade, towards the toe. By radius, do you mean rocker?

Sounds like you need a 6 lie at your preferred length. Call it whatever you want.

Alright, thanks. That helps me out quite a bit. One more thing, are there any pro-stock curves that fit this description?

No generic pro patterns that I'm aware of and most actual pro patterns change on a regular basis.

I also have a Drury blade with a 5.5 lie. I cut about 4 inches off my stick because I like a shorter stick. But there is a lot of wear on the heel of my stick after only one game. What can I do to get my lie lower? Do I have to change sticks?

I'm about 5'9" and the stick comes to my chin on skates.

i dont know about you guys, but all my sticks wear at the heel probably because it sits against the ice when i skate without the puck. when it appears to wear evenly i actually feel like the lie is too low when shooting or stickhandling.

When I played last 7 years ago I don't recall my heal wearing that much like it is now. I have like an inch or two of tape worn off by the end of a game now.

You cant change the lie of your blade so ya you would have to get a new blade. The only other sollution would be to cut it shorter, then you might stickhandle closer to your body and be able to use the higher lie.

You can go to a lie 5 blade OR...

if it's a wood blade, you can shave some of the blade off at the heel and then seal it with epoxy or wood glue (at least that's what I've seen some guys use). But I'm sure everyone would tell you that will weaken the blade, blah blah. The pros used to shave their blades down all of the time to get the lie just right.

I have the same thing...cut my stick shorter and hold and shoot closer to the body now, seems better.

Did you use the exact same blade pattern and stick length when you last played?

If so, then maybe your stride and skating position have changed a little, and you're skating closer to the ice. And/Or maybe you are stickhandling with the puck farther out in front of you. Both of these will cause wear on the heel, meaning, as you know, the lie is a little too high.

Small changes in stick length, lie radius (rocker), and skating/stickhandling style will all affect how the blade lies on the ice.

I have no idea what blade pattern I was using. During my next game I'm going to refrain from taking any slap shots and see if that's what's causing it. If it is maybe my slapshots are too far from my body and causing the heel to wear a lot. What do you guys think?
