Yeah agreed about them adding a 3rd point win before not getting anything for a loss in OT. Traditionalists would hate that though because of teams like Detroit who win 50 games would have a whole bunch of points lol. I hate the points for a loss in OT. What makes that so different than a loss in regulation? You didn't get the dubbaya so why should you be rewarded

Because this league rewards losing.

Close, it just doesn't reward winning as much as it should.

If they're going to give out three points in a game that goes to OT, they should give out three points when the game ends in regulation.

I think you'll have a hard time selling a 4th column in the standings.

I couldn't care less about the number of columns in the standings. TSN and ESPN already list a dozen different fields in their standings, it's not like people can't handle information. That said, having W-OTW-OTL-L doesn't require a PHD to figure out. 3 for the W, 2 for the OTW, 1 for the OTL and 0 for the L. Hell even listing it as wins with the OT number in parentheses would be fine. Read it like a boxer's knockout stats 40(5)-15-5 would be 40 wins, 5 in OT, 15 loses and 5 loses in OT.

I'm all for getting rid of the point for losing in OT in the first place, I just don't expect the NHL to do that. I just think giving a third point is more likely than giving only two.

I hear ya, but everytime the idea comes up the appearance of the standings gets trotted out. Remember, some GM's aren't exactly rocket scientists.

They should definantly do the 3point for a win, 2 for overtime and 1 for OT loss format.

But as posted before, the traditionlists don't want teams with 140+points, takes away from tradition, which is lame since it's only an aestichs thing...

Other wise they should just say... 2points for a win, 1 for a OT win and 0 for a OT loss...

I don't really care which of those two formats people prefer, but all those 3 point games are really lame... It almost seems like all games in march went to OT, because both teams wanted atleast a point for the playoff race.

Huge game for the caps tonight. Apparently both Williams and Whitney are back tonight for the canes. But they are not breaking up the top 3 lines, because they don't want to mess with the chemistry.

They will get time on the PP etc and some even strength time to ease back in

Them's the breaks.

I realize now why you are taking the tack you are taking.

When you take away the shootout, meaning 1 point each if both teams are tied after the OT period, but still award 2 for winning in the OT period, boston are out of the playoffs.

EASTERN CONFERENCE STANDINGS (WITHOUT SHOOTOUT)

1. Pittsburgh Penguins* 79 39-29-11 89

2. Montreal Canadiens* 79 39-29-11 89

3. Carolina Hurricanes* 79 40-34-5 85

4. Ottawa Senators 79 39-32-8 86

Those standings still don't take into account the idea of a losing team getting no points, regardless of when the loss takes place. They just eliminate the SO. Moot post.

The point is, you are defending the setup of awarding points to losers, and that skill teams would benefit by just sitting round and waiting for the shootout.

Turns out, the shootout is the only reason the bruins are in the playoffs, no wonder you defend that notion.

You can't make that statement because you don't know how coaches may have adjusted their strategies if the shootout didn't exist.

You are right. We all know Julien likes to play high risk winning hockey, not just a trap and try to get out with a 1 goal win. Why do you think the bruins have so many OT/SO games, it's because the coach is afraid to take a chance.

Exicting stuff to watch that is.

Also falling into that exciting to watch category is, paint drying, grass growing and snail racing

Then he must be pissed with how they've played the last 4-5 games. Krejci must have been a star of the week for backchecking.

Edit: To be honest, it wouldn't bother me one lick if the B's didn't make the playoffs this year. They won't make any noise if they do. I am banking on next year being a season for the B's.

can someone explain how those adjusted standings were created? In the SO-less stnadings, the teams have more games in the loss column. How can that happen is you just take away the shootout. From the way it's explained. It seems to me that however many SO wins a team has should be transfered to the OTL/tie column and regulation losses should remain the same...unless he counts OT losses as regular losses too and his 3 numbers are W-L-T...I may have just answered my own question but I am still confused.

I think thats the way it is.

W-L-T

2-0-1 (points)

Actually, going to the third tie-breaker, Boston would be in 8th over Buffalo in this scenario.

Although I pull for the Canes aside from my main team the Sharks (because of my location so they're easy to follow), I want the Caps to win tonight and make the playoffs.

Morrison went down with an injury but if the caps keep plaing the way they did in the first period, they'll win this one

Yeah, a 2-0 lead within the first period is a good sign I'd say. Anythings possible though...

That was huge. Ovechkin showing leadership when staal took the extra tap at huet when he trapped the puck.

End to end rushes, lots of chances, hard hitting, and Laviolette the red faced hamster.

All in all, a good game

First 5 game win streak in 7 years

That was great to see. Did you see Ovie look up at the bigscreen to see the replay of Huet making the save in the middle of the whole shinanegans?

Here is one for pondering....

IF the caps win tomorrow night, and the leafs beat the sens tomorrow, and the Bruins beat the sens on Friday, the caps and the sens would both have 92 points.

And the caps hold the tiebreakers (they would both, at that stage have 42 wins, next tiebreaker is head to head record, and the caps swept the series this year).

So, after tomorrow, if the leafs win and the caps win, I will be cheering loud and proud for a Bruins win on friday!!!!!

I'll be at the caps game on saturday, it's going to be mental
