lingering back pain

Ive looked through previous threads.. Im only 19 and I wouldn't think that I would already have back pain after every game, which lasts for about 4 days, but I do. . is it an injury or is it normal for when you get older? Anything I can do besides taking a two week break? ?

i had back pain and i got one of those icy hot medicated heat wraps things. It works like a charm, you should try it.

Bad idea, do not ignore lingering back pain. You should get it checked out...It could be a herniated disk or pelvis issue. Does it hurt in your lower lumbar area?

There's a difference between "pain" and "sore". I am out of shape and overweight, skating/playing for an hour where I'm constantly bending my knees and back, using muscle for support instead of bone, will leave me stiff and sore the next day.

Some lingers for a few days since I'm lazy and don't do much to counteract, but I can't say I have lingering pain, even with scoliosis and all.

what's a lumbar area? but it is in the lower back. if it doesn't get better soon Ill do something, i guess playing more hockey isnt gonna help!

Actually playing more hockey and working out could help...

1½ year ago I got back-sore regurarly, went to a chiropractor, he said my muscles were too weak in the lower back to take the stress of playing.

I've been playing more and working out eversince without any soreness. If I'd take a break for 2months and start again I'd get sore again.

Real bad idea, I was about 19-20 when I herniated my first disk in my back. Like Rustpot said, there is a BIG difference between pain and being sore. With my experience heat is very bad unless it's a pulled muscle. If there is any inflammation heat will make it worse, use ice and advil. Also try laying on your side with a pillow between your knees and your legs pulled up about mid way. It takes alot of pressure off of your spine.

Get it looked at NOW or you could be set up for back problems for the rest of your life.

I have had some lower back problems myself - mostly related to soreness and stiffness (not pain). I have had it checked out by the doctor, and he said that the best thing for it would be exercise and fixing my sleeping position.

Sure enough, if I exercise regularly and do lower back exercises I have no soreness at all. I also picked up a tempurpedic mattress cover and sleep with a pillow inbetween my legs if I'm laying on my side.

Helps a TON.

But yah, if its PAIN, go see a doctor ASAP.

I was having some bad back pains and after the run-around I finally got a doctor to take an MRI. I have two ruptured discs in my back... Get it checked out and don't give up until you find out what's wrong.

I'm still playing hockey but at least I know what's wrong, so when worse comes to worse I have a gameplan.

This is my opinion and what works for me. Your spine and any joint for that matter is like a set of lego blocks stacked on one another. Normally they are perfectly aligned & work great. Alignment of the blocks is controlled by muscles - they act like guy wires holding a tower.

Sports like hockey, skating, water-skiing, golf create an imbalance in the muscle groups that cause a subtle but permanent shift in alignment. It's like tensioning one of those guy-wires too much - what happens? The tower of legos bends to one side.

This causes stress in the joint(s) and discs/cartilidge as they are improperly loaded, in a chronic situation. It is also an injury waiting to happen too.

The solution to an imbalance issue is to correct it. You have to work the opposing muscle groups to re-align the joint(s) again. Anything else is a temporary solution in my opinion.

A simple rubber band is all that I use work opposites. For the lower back I use a pull-back exercise, using the heel of the foot attached to the rubber band. Standing, straight leg, pull back, 20 or 30 reps on each leg, 2 -3 times per day, more if necessary. After a round of this it is better than taking meds, ice etc.

There is also an opposite I am working on the save the knees from too much skating. i think I have that one figured too.

The above applies to repititive stress related pain caused by imbalances. There are other reasons for joint pain, that the above will not apply.

Back in the late 80's I had to hang 'em up for 6 years due to a chronic back situation that became a really bad back injury. After all the meds etc. it was caused by a wicked imbalance. I wish I knew then what I've figured out now.

it was a pulled muscle. Thanks for the advice though, could prove to save me someday :)

hey man I'm 20 and a college wrestler and play inline hockey and watch religiously...at the start of our season I had lower back pain for about 2 months....what i suggest you do is ice your back or 20 minuets in the morning and do various stretching to get it loose than put on some muscle cream and then after your games ice for 20 minuets and stretch before and after you play...your hamis could be tight which would bring back pain do that for a couple weeks and if it doesn't get better I'd go see a doctor

Strengthen the hamstring group; they attach into the back of the hip and soreness at the origin tends to radiate and manifest itself as lower back pain.
