Most Protective Elbow Pads

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for the most protective elbow pads available. I severly broke my arm a few years back and now I have 2 plates and 15 screws holding it together. I've never played hockey before, so I'm not quite sure what kind of abuse to expect. In any event, I'd like to keep my elbow well protected. Right now, I'm leaning towards the RBK 9K. Any suggestions (also, protection is more important to me than mobility)?

I appreciate the help.

What part of your arm would you like to be best protected, the elbow, top or bottom of arm or bicep? Some pads excel in one area more than the others.

Do you plan to wear a brace of any kind on it?

If you are going to brace it, I'd have the brace with you when you are trying on pads to make sure everything fits properly.

Ideally, the elbow and 4-5 inches above the elbow on the lateral portion of the arm. If I had to narrow it down to one area, I'd say the just the area above the elbow. It is least protected by the muscles.

I have a pair of Easton S9 elbow pads and I happen to think the protection is quite solid. There's a plastic protector with a thin layer of foam about five inches long on the lateral side above the elbow. It overlaps the cap a bit too depnding on how bent or straight your arm is at the time. The plastic insert is also in three peices so it allows for a good range of motion.

I have used Jofas for years and have been very happy with them. The RBK pads are essentially Jofas with the RBK logo. The RBK 9K, which you mention, should do the job.

However, due to your unique medical situation, I would check with your doctor first. He might be able to create or direct you to some supplemental padding or brace to use in addition to a standard elbow pad. Furthermore, he might very well be able to judge the protective merits of various pads to suit your medical needs.

The RBK's would be an excellent choice with regards to protection, and I personally use the CCM V8.0's which are very solid, and do not slide down your arm (exposing your elbow) due to the lacing system along the forearm.

I'm also looking for some elbow pads this christmas. I want a pad that doesn't slide around, solid protection, not too bulky, and not too long. I was thinking of a pair of supreme 50 and 70 or a pair of rbk 6k any thoughts? sorry for hijacking

No sweat about the hijacking. Take a look at the CCM v10. Everyone raves about how well the drawstring forearm strap secures the pads. I've tried them on, they are nice, not bulky at all. I was going to order a pair, then decided to look for something with a little more protection, given my current situation.

Great. Looks like I can't go wrong getting a pair of the RBKs. Thanks for the feedback.

They're protective but I find them extremely uncomfortable. Honestly, I think just about anyhigh end elbow pad will protect you enough as long as it stays in place... This is why I highly recomend the vectors and almost as highly recommend the eastons and supremes. If the elbow pad doesnt stay in place(RBKs and Jofas move around a lot on my arms) then it creates the opprotunity of not being very protective. Everyone's different, you need to try them on.

I would go with the Easton S9s.

I used to wear only low quality, low protection elbow pads because I needed as much mobility as possible.

This summer I got the S9s because they were on sale for 35 dollars, they are extremely protective and atleast twice as mobile as my old crappy elbow pads that were basically like wearing nothing.

I forgot I was wearing the S9s almost right away, but I certainly remembered when I went hard into the boards elbows first. Felt nothing.

The guys here have given you some great choices. I concurr with the RBK 9K'

s or the Easton S-9's. I have both and they are both great elbow pads. No slippage and cover the essential areas.

RBK/Jofa are amazingly protective elbow pads. I'm using the 9044s and I haven't had any problems. I've got long shoulder pads though, so they cover most of my arm since the 9044s don't have the bicep pad.

Thanks guys! I will look into the vectors as I have also heard many great things about them! Would buying a mid-end hurt my performance? I was going to step down and maybe look at 8.0, 6,0 or some rbk 6k.

Your best bet is to go somewhere that carries most of these, and try them on yourself. Comfort and fit are very subjective.

I'm a big fan of the entire Itech protective line. I'm especially fond of the Pro Elite 990 elbows as they are the first elbows that both fit me perfectly and provided bullet proof protection thats stays in place.
