Easton S9 vs. Tackla 5000 Pro

Recommended Posts

I've got bad hips. Arthritis, necrosis, the works...

I've tried the Tackla 9000 Air and wasn't nuts about the no-zipper and padding seemed skimpy for the price tag. I'm currently sporting the Bauer Supreme70's - they offer about the same protection as the 9000 Air but were less expensive. Previously I'd used CCM's but the fit wasn't right (I felt like they were either tight, or I was swimming in them).

So I'd heard that the Easton S9 and Tackla 5000 Pro have great protection (neither of them are available locally) can anyone tell me how they stack up? Are the 5000 pro's really worth the extra $70?

Thanks in advance!

I was just looking for a new pair of pants and really wanted the Tackla's. I didn't like how they fix. Nothing specific, they just didn't feel right to me.

I tried on, maybe, 10 different models before I finally settled on the Nike Bauer One90s....I love them!

I had tried on a One90 and liked it too, but I also felt like it wasn't worth the extra 30-40 over what I paid for the Supreme70. The padding was good but not GREAT. I think it doesn't help that I got the 70's for pretty cheap too.

I also agree, the Tackla 9000 are really nothing special, especially against the current crop of pants. They shouldn't command the $140 price tag I've seen for them - definitely too much.

Both are nice pants. Just a warning on the easton pants. I find they tend to run a little wide so if you're on the skinny side, I would consider the tackla.

Depending on your size Peranis has some 5000s for $49. Worst case, a $20 shell will cover some of the odd colored models.

I've said this numerous times but I'm very happy with my one90 pants. The padding is right where it needs to be and they are extremely mobile, weight is non-existant. You don't think about wearing these pants, they are just a part of you.

The only thing that keeps these from being perfect is the stuip belly pad that just sits there. I dont see the point in it, not that it's in the way or uncomfortable just odd why they'd make one that comes up soo high.

The Easton S-9 is an extremely protective pant, a bit stiff at first but once it's broken in it is very flexable. The Tackla 5000 isn't as protective but has amazing flexability and mobility. I know because I have them both because I couldn't make up my mind which I liked better so I got them both. I use my Eastons in my hockey mens league and my Tacklas to play pickup and sometimes I switch. Both are excellent pants in my opinion and can handle any level of hockey.

Thanks for the endorsements guys - I'll check out the S9's first (they seem to be more "available" and I can always return them if I don't like them). If I don't like the fit I'll order a pair of 5000 Pro's online (most places I've seen won't accept returns of the 5000's).

Thanks for the heads-up on the 5000 vs. 5000 pro, JR. I've seen older 5000 floating around (I even posted a question about it not too long ago). So if I do end up going down that road, I'll make sure it's the pro/X.
