shin pad straps

Recommended Posts

my shin pads (bauer supreme 3000) are several years old and the velcro is almost worn out. these pads have the wrap around the calf padding so i was thinking about just cutting off the straps and relying solely on the sock and tape to keep them in place and tight. before trying it out, i was wondering if any of you have tried this.

i realize i could test it out before cutting the straps by not using the straps, but i don't want to mess around with my shin pads in the middle of a game.

You can use clear tape, shin tights or elastic shin straps over your socks to secure your shon pads. I prefer the elastic shin straps ( I use ProTex shin straps) I've tried the shin tights but find it difficult to overlap my pads over my skate tongue with them once they are on. They hold a little too tight over the bottom portion of my shin pads.

I usually like to have the straps to give a "base" grip on my legs, and then finish off with some tape to make it right.

hmmm, thats what i was worried about. maybe i'll go to drop in and try it strapless before cutting them.

I've always used the straps, but I pretty much max out the elastic. Few wraps with cloth tape in the notch below the knee, wrap the ankle (tucked shin and sock, tape around the tongue and tendon). Never shift on me.

Wrap the straps backwards to try them out first. Run a piece of tape down the center of the shin if the velcro doesn't line up, that will keep them out of the sock and out of the pad. Bring tape to the bench and if you don't like it, unzip your thighs, unhook the top of the sock, strap up, pull the sock up, tape, done.

wow u make it seem so simple, that job right there would take me probably 5 mins to do.. but then again, i'm the world's slowest dresser lol..

anyways,, I have rbk 7ks that are about 2 yrs old I guess (whenever they first came out), and eventhough though elastic is purely run it's course, I still use the straps as a "base" as well,, and then I tape around below the knee and sprial down to about mid calf and back up to the knee. can't afford to have them shift on me, last week I slammed knee first into the bottom of the boards at close to full speed, thought I near cracked my pads, at the end of the game, pads were still fine, but knee was badly badly bruised and swollen. swelling has gone down, the bruise still has some color but I'm going to drop-in clinic tonight. hopefully I won't fall on that knee because it would really suck.

Zippers and velcro make things easy. I've taken a whole leg off on the bench when I forgot to pull up a sock and the velcro was chafing a spot on my leg.

Your post is one of the reasons I've been meaning to upgrade my shins. Looking for a 15/16" high end Jofa/RBK on the cheap. Mine is an older Jofa with the thin lining and JDP stuff.

I wore my shins for beginning skating class. Everyone looked at me funny, but I got right back up every time I fell. Can't say the same for everyone else.

I would not remove the calf protectors. I once got kicked in the leg by a skate. It cut into the calf muscle, and resulted in lots of stitches, three weeks on crutches, and three weeks of PT. The odds of such an injury are slim, but I was very lucky that there was no nerve damage or severing of a major artery or vein.

my shin pads (bauer supreme 3000) are several years old and the velcro is almost worn out. these pads have the wrap around the calf padding so i was thinking about just cutting off the straps and relying solely on the sock and tape to keep them in place and tight. before trying it out, i was wondering if any of you have tried this.

i realize i could test it out before cutting the straps by not using the straps, but i don't want to mess around with my shin pads in the middle of a game.

no, i plan on leaving the wraparound calf protectors, but removing just the velcro straps.

Kevin Bieksa had a similar injury although his was worse. Deeper cut and there were rumors his achilles was also cut. He's out indefinately.
