Ranking Boot Stiffness

Recommended Posts

Can someone please how these skate models rank in terms of boot stiffness ? Easton 1500c, CCM Pro Tacks, RBK 9K, One90s, Bauer 8090s & the Graf Ultra G* series.

I've got a set of weak ankles, looking for new skates and would like some relatively stiff skates ... no LHS nearby to try them all.

all the skates you have mentioned are all higher end skates, and one of the reason better players buy these skates (aside from the fit) are to get a boot that is stiffer so they can take punishment and continue to hold up. I myself have a pair of one90s and 9ks and i think they both have a fairly high stiffness. I have heard that the Graf 707s would be good for ankle problems, though im not 100% sure about that. Perhaps somebody else could shed some light on those.

Graf 707's would be VERY soft around the ankles. The skates you listed will not all fit you. What skates DOES your LHS have? Try those on. That would be your best start. You really need to have skates on your feet to judge fit, not just picking the stiffest boot.

Just as a question of skating fitting, would you recommend someone with

weak ankles to just wear a higher cut boot or a stiffer boot?

I have owned the pro tack, the 7000, and the 1500. I would easily say that (and not to be contrary to Andoy) of the 3 the 1500 was easily the stiffest (I know, you didn't ask about the 7000, but since someone brought it up I figured what the hell).

What do you skate in now and what happens when you skate in them?

EXAMPLE: I wear a _______ (brand) ____________ (model and year) and my feet ________________________________________________________________________ ( fill in the blank)

Simple questions: are your heels locked in?

are your skates too tight or too loose?

Give us all the details so that we can honestly help you.

The only way you're going to strenghten your ankles, is to skate with proper posture.

The higher cut boot would make more sense. Sometimes with an extremely stiff skate is is hard to lace the top of the skate securely around the ankles and you'll get gaps.

Now, I wear a pair of Graf 709s that I got off the Internet. I bought a size 9 for shoe sized feet 11.5 left and 11.0 right. I don't feel the support I need

in the 709s as I do have weak ankles. The toecap feels tight around my toes and my feet get numb after removing the skates, even with the laces tied normally. I feel like the skates are a tad small for me and the ankle support is not there. My heels do bob up and down a bit; could be due to the forward pitch of the Graf holder.

I did briefly get to try Easton 1500c, but in a size a little too big for me. However, even in that trial the ankle support felt adequate.

My bad. I should've added 'from personal experience' instead of 'hands down'. I was actually looking at the 1500 before settling on the one90s so I'm glad I didn't decide on those (although the one90s are fairly stiff as well)!

As for the 7000s I tried to give them a chance....9months of skating albeit 2-3 times per week and they were still cement casts...had to sell them.

1300's were retarded stiff too.

The 8090's are plenty stiff if they fit, and are a light skate with good prtoection...you'll prolly have a tough time finding them, but if you do, you should have a good price.

The 9k's are stiff to start off, but will soften up faster than the Bauers will if my 7k's are any indication.

The Pro-Tacks would be a great option - good stiffness and they are very durable. Price-wise, they, along with the 8090's, would be my first picks.

I'd have to agree on the Pro-Tacks. They are fairly light, stiff without being overbearing.

I am currently sporting some Kor Shift2's and those are STIFF - if laced to the top you would have to be the bionic man to get forward flexion (but they do offer fantastic protection from errant pucks). I leave the top few laces undone so the forward motion isn't an issue, but they're quite stiff. I'm going off memory, but I'd say the 1500's side walls were stiffer, though.
