GekigangarIII 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 Bill Gates: how can we make money before we release windows xp on the world?Engineer: we can repackage win 98 SE, and take random chunks of code out, and put random 0101010 in.Bill Gates: but I wouldnt buy thatEngineer: we will call it THE MELENIUM EDITIONBG: How soon how we start production? at least windows doesn't charge you for service packs...Steve Jobs: OSX was good, but I keep getting complaints about stability. People love the pretty icons and all the space-aged movement on screen. It's a dazzler! But it does need a little polishing under the bitmaps. But we blew the bank on getting it released. We can't afford to keep the programmers on staff much longer without renewing our service agreement with the contracting company we hired them from. How will we pay the bill to get the updates out?Jaguar (OSX service pack 1) = $129Panther (OSX service pack 2) = $129Tiger (OSX service pack 3 coming) = $129 or more...;)
Vapor 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 lol. Windows service packs fill in large holes to the os. They do not have any additonal groundbreaking features like apple updates do, such as expose, spotlight (search your entire hardrive in under 1 second), and hundreds of other features. Not updating to the next version of the OS will not leave you suseptible to attack. and btw... dont call OS X unstable, those who live in glass stations shouldnt throw stones. GekigangarIII 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 and btw... dont call OS X unstable, those who live in glass stations shouldnt throw stones. please, I was there when OSX was released... my wife's shop had nothing but trouble with it until Jaguar came along. Weren't you the one throwing rocks anyway (ME)? wow... metasearch (spotlight).. I liked it when it was called sherlock 6 years ago.BA HA HA HA.. "Expose" lol... it took OSX 3 years to get a freaking task bar! Wow! now I can FINALLY see all of the programs that are open, really pushing the envelope there. Come on, just admit that you're paying $130 a pop for a prettied up interface, and the ability to say you're running the newest 'cat'.
Vapor 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 lol. Do you know what that expresion means? It means, that your calling OS X unstable, when windows is about 100x more unstable. ME? LOL! Worst OS ever, hands down. Sherlock is not an instant search sir. Do you even know what your talking about? Sherlock searches for flights and pictures, etc. Spotlight searches your entire hardrive for one word (even a word in a pdf) and finds it in 1 second flat. Windows cannot compare to Expose. (it can do the F11 command, which is to get all the windows out of your way, by using win +d), but come on, how much more convient is it to press F9 and see every window, click on it and continue. OR F10 when you are in a program like ichat and want to go to another window int he same program (these are defaults btw). Come on, dont diss apple, just cause your jelous. And OS X (original release) was and always will be more stable than any version of Windows (well, maybe not dos)
mack 44 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 Shit, this is turning into "Colors" but only with computers and nerds.
Vapor 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 theres no fight, we all know macs are more gooder. And im not a nerd... eh, I am... but Unix 4 lyfe
LegoDoom 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 but Unix 4 lyfe Then why don't you use it?
jay 1 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 Actually geki, a Mac is still far superior to anything on a PC for image editing no matter who puts your computer together. Trust me, I've been using PC's for the last 3-4 years and trying to color match and color correct something is about as futile as it gets. The processes for doing so are just not built into the Windows operating system as it is with the Macintosh and the display gamma is different and impossible to duplicate. If we're just talking about running the applications (Photoshop CS is terrible slow on my PC btw) I can see your argument but it goes far beyond that. I just wish I could afford to buy a Mac. Vapor 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 I dont use unix because I am lazy, honestly. I can use linux, but im not a "poweruser", I am just too lazy to learn the commands. Not to say macs are cheap by any means, but you can get them financed, and there are MANY student and business related discounts. I got about 500 bucks off my entire machine.
LegoDoom 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 Financing doesn't make it cheaper. And it's not just the machine, the peripherals and software are eye-gouging.If you're really into photo editing or are buying a laptop, then I think a Mac does have the advantage. However, that's about the only reason you should be buying one (besides the fact that they look cool or are a weird status symbol in some circles).I love Unix, but don't use it for recreational computer purposes. Vapor 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 I agree, I really do agree, wotn fight you there, macs are expensive. I do believe that people other than photoediters should use the machines though. They are VERY user friendly. They are much easier to use (IMO) than a windows machine. Everything just works. A big selling point, for me, was that they looked cool ;). Apple is a cult, when your at starbucks and see soembody on a powerbook, its like they are your brother, or if you see somebody with an ipod. You give em a wave. Chadd 916 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 With a Mac you have to adapt to the Apple way of doing things. To most that's not an intuitive way of doing things.
GekigangarIII 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 Apple is a cult, when your at starbucks and see soembody on a powerbook, its like they are your brother, or if you see somebody with an ipod. If I see someone with a powerbook in a starbucks, I look for their silver Jetta with the rainbow sticker in the parking lot. ;)Jay, as far as color matching goes, it's difficult on a mac as well. You have to have the absolute best components for both pc and mac in that case (monitor, vidcard, etc.). That's if you're not using a printshop to do the matching for you. At any rate it's a difficult game for either pc or mac, the pc is a bit more tricky because they aren't limited by 5 models like apple is. There's alot of crap PC hardware that won't do color matching no matter what you try, but now a days there are alot of "lower end" macs that are the same way. With the right PC components it's just as easy on a pc. But I will say, it's NEVER fun on any platform. But you're probably hitting the odds when you go mac for color matching. Vapor 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2004 dont make it seem like its a similar experience sir. Unless you have done it yourself, on both machines. Lets just say take a bite out of the apple
ChiefsHockey 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2004 I might just have to go with a Mac becuase I am more comfortable with them and they are IMO very easy to use. However I do like my sisters PC with windows XP. I am still not sure which platform I should get but I leaning towards the mac because I have had my imac for 5 years and it has never gotten a virus, unlike my sisters PC. However I do like my sisters PC with windows XP. I am still not sure which platform I should get but I leaning towards the mac because I have had my imac for 5 years and it has never gotten a virus, unlike my sisters PC. Two major reasons for that.1 Why waste time writing a virus for less than 10% of all computers?2 User behavior is the most often cause of infection. If your sister clicks on all kinds of links, she's going to get a computer virus.
GekigangarIII 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2004 dont make it seem like its a similar experience sir. Unless you have done it yourself, on both machines. Lets just say take a bite out of the apple I have done it myself on both platforms. I've already stated that in my experience it's easier on a mac (in general), but just as possible on a PC.Also, I've never been infected with a virus on any of my pcs (or macs for that matter). Granted, I'm an IT Security specialist... ;)on a side note, man... this thread is getting nuts (mostly from Vapor and I), it really boils down to what you're comfortable with. If you're comfortable with the mac way of doing things, go that route. If you like windows go the PC route. It really depends on what you're going to do with the machine. If you're just out to web browse and check email you're not going to need much of a machine anyway (on either platform).
Vapor 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2004 No spyware either? But hey, even if there is a reason there are no virii on apples, its still the fact that there are none
GekigangarIII 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2004 No spyware either? Nope, well, I had gator on my machine one time about 5 years ago when it first surfaced. I think it mostly depends on where you hang out on the net. If you avoid idiotic programs like irc, Kazaa and other peer to peer jokes you cut out about 90% of the bad stuff out there. My home machine is really stripped down, it's a beast of a machine hardware wise, but honestly it does very little besides AV, Games and browsing.
