Nike Bauer S9 Skate Question

Recommended Posts

A few questions for those of you in the know. I have come across a pair of Nike Bauer S9s in my skate size but may or may not be the correct width. I take a D width in the "classic" Bauer skates (Canstar and before). However since Nike acquired the brand, they got narrower as you know and my small toes get pinched on the outside of the boots by the toe caps where they meet the boot. I'm currently on my second pair of D-width 8090s, which are fine in the forefoot but too wide in the heel. Because of this, I've worn a hole in the liner of one of my boots, like happened with my previous pair because my heels must be slipping sideways.

Anyway, I'm looking to replace my skates and came across the S9s in my size and D width. Does anyone know if the D width in S9 skates is the same as the D width of NBH's retail Supreme skates or is it a "wider D" like the old Bauers? If so, I may jump on them. I mostly officiate, so I'm looking for a mostly black boot. I've also worn Bauers for the past 28 years so I'm looking to stay with the brand if possible. If it doesn't work out, I may wait until spring and get a pair of NBH One75 skates when they come out. Also, do S9s tend to come with LS2s or Custom + blades? Or, does it vary with the player they were made for?

Thanks for any help you can give me with this.

I'm thinking he means Bauer S9s, the pro stock Supremes dressed up as One90s. They're like penguins in tuxedos.

Yes, those are the ones I mean. Let me elaborate a bit...I've had a pair of 5000s from the Canstar-era in 7D which fit me great. When those finally died I owned a pair of 7000s from the Nike-era. The Nike-era 7000s in 7D were narrower in the toe/forefoot area than my Canstar-era 5000s. I got rid of the 7000s and got my first pair of 8090s. Those skates fit much like my Canstar-era 5000s except for being a bit wider in the heel. When the 8090s got worn out in the liners, I got a good price on a pair of Nike-era 5000s on clearance in 7D. Again, the toe box area was too narrow and I unloaded them on eBay when I got my second pair of 8090s for $100 (some kid used them 3 times and didn't like them, he never even had them baked so it was like getting new skates!). So as I'm looking for new skates, I come across S9s in 7D and wonder if this D width will be like the standard retail Nike-era Supreme D width or since S9s were made for pros, NCAA, Juniors, etc...will that D width be more like the "Classic" pre-Nike Bauer Supremes. If they are, I can wear them! If not, I'm SOL on these because they'll STILL be too tight in the toe cap area.

Although a retail 8090 D-width was actually an EE, a custom-ordered 8090 in D-width was a true D -- that is, significantly narrower. The S9's you're looking at, since they are a custom-only skate, are assuredly *not* what you call a 'Classic D' but are in fact a Nike-era 7000-style 'true D' width.

I went through more or less the same fitting process. I ended up in 7.5D Daousts (great fit, apart from being about a litre too shallow in volume), which I found a better fit than even 7.5D 8090s. I don't know why they abandoned that last.

S9's generally come with Custom+, simply because most players stilll prefer it (IIRC), but it's the player's PP as to what goes on his skates.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I think I'm just going to wait a few months for the new NBH One75 skates to come out and give them a look. A gentleman at a LHS up in Surrey, BC told me even the heels on these boots will form to my feet, even forming around the "Bauer Bump" I have on my right heel.

I just really don't want to make the switch to Grafs, because I've heard too many horror stories on this and other online message boards about poor customer service on that company's part when things go wrong with their product.

Where on earth did you find a pair of Daousts?!

Brand new in the basement of my LHS. :) I''ve had to hang them up because of some really nasty foot problems. How I managed to get bone spurs from a pair of leather slippers, I'll never know, but I'm off on the custom route now.

I also found a pair of brand new factory seconds in the original brown leather for my wife. The guys in the shop thought I was nuts.
