Downie

Recommended Posts

I dont know what has t obe done about this kid, but it has to be something serious and it has to be done quickly. Last night, Downie and Blake were having a fight between them broken up, and the linesman didnt tie up Downies left arm properly, and DOwnie used his free arm to sock Blake right in the eye. In my opinion, thats worthy of at least a match penalty, but he was given 4 for roughing.

Ill try to find a video, but in the mean time heres a picture that basically says it all: http://www.gettyimages.com/Search/Detail.a...amp;id=78789347

Only a 2 minute PP came off of this. MacLean said he wants 10 games, PJ Stock and the other person doing HNIC say they don't think it's worth a suspension.

Based on history it should be a suspension. The guy has made it his quest in life to be a douche bag.

Normally Cherry is very critcal almost blaming the refs/linesmen when one guy is tied up, and the other isn't...but he got on Downie pretty good for the cheap shot last night.

What about Kubina's hit on Coburn? If it's the other way around who knows how many people would be crying for a Flyers' suspension. Just shows how much of a joke the NHL's discipline has become.

Of course he did. It was against the Leafs.

I think the biggest reason Cherry was hard on Downie was because of who he was "fighting". Did anyone think that Blake was really going to fight back? Downie is a complete tool, and the whole Flyers team is the angriest team I've seen in a long time. Downie, and it seems like most of the Flyers, play like they're borderline NHLers trying to secure a job on the big club. It seemed like there wasn't a stoppage that didn't involve some sort of scrum. Still, made for an entertaining game, so I'm not really complaining.

Kubina shouldn't be suspended, but it should definitely have been a penalty. If Coburn is hurt, then suspend him.

I can't comment on Kubina/coburn since I did not see it but when I saw Downie throw the cheapshot at Blake, I couldn't believe it. This kid really needs his head examined. I like Old Time Hockey as much as Don Cherry but .........

I don't know what else to say.

Should've been a penalty, but not much more. Cobourn wasn't hurt and it didn't look like anything different than many other similar hits that the NHL condones.

hitting a guy who has both his arms tied up and is not even trying to fight back.. If anyone can even try and defend Downie, I think you would have to be some sort of flyer fanboy or just stupid.. or both lol.

Downie never goes after anyone bigger than him or tries to fight anyone bigger than him. He is a pussy, simply put. And then he has this smerk as he is going to the box like he is a badass. I hope someone just kicks the crap out of him real bad one game.

We can sit here and argue about certain calls that were missed but it went both ways in that game. And it is not like the flyers have any class to them anyway so it is hard for them to get any sympathy.

BTW, I thought it was funny when Nitty made a stop and Sundin stopped pretty far from nitty and then went up to him and tapped him (with his glove on his elbow, or something) to say nice save, one of the guys from the flyers comes up and gives Sundin a shove for it. Sundin shows some class and takes a shove for it.. great class shown from the flyers there.

I honestly don't know what is wrong with that team. Hatcher bites someone, Downie with this, along with all the stuff earlier in the season- damn

I agree, but my point is that if a Flyer bloodied a player on a board there'd be outrage. It frustrates me how stupid the Flyers were at the beginning of the year and the reputation they've built.

If it were a Flyer who bloodied a player on the boards nobody would be surprised, and people would simply add it to their list of grievances against them.

I doubt Downie will last as long as Simon. Simon, in his day, was a heavyweight. Downie really is a lightweight. Since Downie likes the smaller guys(Blake and McAmmond), if he tries to get near Gomez or Drury, Colton Orr will rip his head off before the linesman ever drops the puck.

this reminded me... a couple seasons ago, didn't someone throw a punch in between linesmen and knock out some of chara's teeth? maybe it was someone else, cause i was trying to find it on youtube and couldn't. any ideas?

The clock is ticking on Downie. Either the league is going to justly scapegoat him as the kind of player they want out of the sport, or someone's going to pulp him for the good of all mankind. Personally, I hope the enforcers get to him before the league does. Avery looks like Yzerman next to this prick.

I get the impression that if he reduces his extra curricular activities to just an agitating level he can be a very productive player. Though I haven't seen any of his junior career, over 2 PPG in his final OHL season and nearly a PPG with the Phantoms makes me think there's some skill present.

I was watching the game last night but don't follow the leafs, but did Blake already have a bruise under that eye or did the punch do that? It disgusted me when he had that smirk on his face when being escorted to the penalty box.

Putting up 2 PPG as a 19 year old against 17 year olds in the OHL doesn't really impress me too much. In those 21 games so far this year in the AHL, it's not the 5 goals, 12 assists that stand out. It's more like the 114 PIMS in 21 games. Talent? OK. Screw loose? Definitely. Major train wreck waiting to happen at the NHL level. The Flyers will be left with blood on their hands.

Has he ever been placed in some form of counseling? I'm not overly concerned about it, if he doesn't develop into a functioning human I'll just blame the loss of a first round pick on Bob Clarke.

And yes the 114 PIM are unbelievable though he did rack up 65 in one game, I'm not sure if that makes it any better.
